The 2020 Toyota GR Supra (J29) marks the return of a legend after a 17-year hiatus. Developed in partnership with BMW (it shares the platform with the Z4), it is the most controversial yet capable sports car Toyota has built in decades. While purists complain about the BMW parts, the reality is that the German engineering makes it a precision instrument. It is a strict 2-seater that screams "I have arrived."

Three engines are available, all sourced from BMW:

• SZ / SZ-R (2.0L Turbo): 194 HP / 255 HP. SMART CHOICE Uses the BMW B48 engine. It is lighter over the nose, making it handle sharper than the 3.0L. The SZ-R (255 HP) is the sweet spot for Kenyan taxes and performance.
• RZ (3.0L Turbo Inline-6): 335 HP. Uses the BMW B58 engine. This is the one you want for the sound and the 0-100 kph time of 4.3 seconds. It is a rocket ship.

• BMW Interior: The buttons, iDrive screen, and shifter are all BMW. This is a good thing—it feels premium and solid. The seats are supportive Alcantara or Leather.
• Blind Spots: Visibility is poor. The rear pillars are thick, and the windows are slits. You rely heavily on sensors and cameras. Boot space (290L) is enough for two weekend bags, but the opening is narrow.

• Consumption: 12 km/l (2.0L) vs 9-10 km/l (3.0L). It requires V-Power (Premium Unleaded) strictly.
• Service: Do not take this to a regular Toyota mechanic. The engine is BMW. You need a specialist who understands German cars. Parts are expensive and often need to be ordered.
• Tyres: Michelin Pilot Super Sports are standard. They are sticky but wear out fast (20,000km). A set costs Ksh 150,000+.

Ground Clearance Alert: At 119mm, it is one of the lowest cars on the market. You cannot drive this over standard speed bumps without crabbing (going sideways). The front splitter is carbon fiber (or plastic) and will crack if you hit a curb. This is strictly for the highway and smooth areas like Karen or Muthaiga.

Includes Toyota Supra Safety (rebranded BMW safety tech) with Pre-Collision System. The B48 and B58 engines are widely regarded as BMW's most reliable modern engines, but they still have complex cooling systems that need monitoring.
