Subaru Outback is a midsize car built by the Japanese carmaker Subaru.

Broadly speaking, the name Subaru Outback may be divided into two categories: the Subaru Legacy-based station wagon (1994-present) and the Subaru Impreza-derived hatchback, the Outback Sport (1994-2011).

History and specifications of Subaru Outback

The Outback station wagon was derived from the Subaru Legacy station wagon.

The Subaru Outback station wagon debuted in 1994. However, it was in the fourth generation when the Subaru Outback was called the Legacy Outback, worldwide. It had varying names in the different markets before then. During the fifth generation, the Legacy name was dropped completely to become a free-standing model line of its own, thus bringing a greater product differentiation between the two.

Chassis stiffness was improved for the fifth generation – the Outback now being classified as a crossover SUV.

The Subaru Outback is now in its sixth generation.
