The Big Picture
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLS is the final chapter of a design revolution. When the original CLS launched in 2004, it invented the "4-door coupe" segment, prioritizing beauty over headroom. This 3rd Generation (C257, launched 2018) continues that tradition but with a sharper "Shark Nose" front end introduced in the 2021 facelift. With production ending soon, owning a late-model CLS is owning a piece of Mercedes history.

Engine Options & Model Codes
Based on the E-Class, but with sportier tuning:
-
CLS 220d (2.0L Diesel): 194 HP. STANDARD The efficiency choice. The OM654 engine is smooth, quiet, and delivers 15-18 km/l. Adequate power for cruising.
-
CLS 450 4MATIC (3.0L Inline-6 Petrol): 367 HP + 22 HP (EQ Boost). The engine the car deserves. Silky smooth, mild-hybrid assist, and effortless speed.
-
CLS 53 AMG (3.0L Inline-6): 435 HP. The performance sweet spot. Replaced the old V8s. Sound is synthesized but sporty.
Interior & Practicality
- Widescreen Cockpit: Standard dual 12.3-inch screens with the new steering wheel (touch-capacitive buttons). The wood trim flows across the doors, creating a "wrap-around" effect.
- Rear Compromise: It is a 5-seater (technically), but the sloping roofline restricts headroom for anyone over 6ft. The boot is decent (520 Litres), but the opening is narrow.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- Consumption: 15–18 km/l (CLS 220d). Excellent for a grand tourer. The CLS 450 manages 10-12 km/l thanks to coasting tech.
- Service: It shares the W213 E-Class chassis, so mechanical parts (brakes, filters) are widely available in Kenya. Body panels (frameless doors, bumpers) are unique and expensive.
- Tyres: Usually staggered fitment (wider rear). Expect to pay a premium for low-profile 19/20-inch tyres.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
Low and Sleek: The CLS is designed for the Autobahn, not bumps. At 118mm clearance (on steel springs), it is very low. Air Body Control (air suspension) is highly recommended for Kenya as it allows you to raise the car for obstacles.
Safety & Reliability
5-Star Euro NCAP rating. Includes Active Brake Assist and Multibeam LED lights. Reliability is good (E-Class bones), but the 48V mild-hybrid battery in the CLS 450 is a complex, expensive component if it fails.

The Ci Verdict
Who is this for? The executive who finds the E-Class too common and the S-Class too large. It is a car for the driver, not the driven. Who is it NOT for? Those who prioritize rear headroom or ease of entry/exit.
