2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC (X253): A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC is the facelift of the 1st Generation (X253), which replaced the boxy GLK in 2015. The 2019 update is significant: it brought the new M264 engine and the MBUX infotainment system ("Hey Mercedes"). In Kenya, it is the default premium crossover, balancing the C-Class luxury with the ground clearance needed for our roads.
Powertrain & Performance
The 2019 facelift introduced critical engine updates:
- GLC 200 / 300 (Petrol): Uses the new 2.0L M264 engine. It is smoother and more efficient (10โ12 km/l) than the previous M274. The GLC 300 adds a slight hybrid boost (EQ Boost) for better acceleration.
- GLC 220d (Diesel): The new OM654 2.0L diesel is a masterpiece. Quiet, clean, and capable of 15โ17 km/l. It is robust but requires AdBlue top-ups.
Design & Practicality
The GLC is a 5-seater with a 550-liter boot, which is practical for most families. Ground clearance is 181mm on coil springs, which handles speed bumps well. Some models come with "Air Body Control" (Air Suspension), which increases clearance but introduces a high risk of failure after 5 years. Stick to steel springs for peace of mind.
Reliability & Maintenance
The new engines are reliable, but the 9G-TRONIC gearbox is sensitive. The biggest risk in Kenya is theft of exterior parts; side mirrors and radar sensors are hot items. We highly recommend riveting these parts or installing protective cages immediately after import.

The Ci Verdict
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC is the safe bet. It does everything well: comfortable ride, decent clearance, and badge prestige. It isn't as exciting as a Velar, but it won't give you as many headaches.
