The Big Picture
The 2019 Mazda CX-8 is the smartest SUV Mazda has ever built for the Kenyan market. Launched in late 2017, it sits perfectly between the 5-seater CX-5 and the massive (and often too wide) CX-9. It offers 7 seats as standard but maintains the narrow body width of the CX-5, making it easy to maneuver in Nairobi traffic while carrying the whole family.
Powertrain & Performance
The CX-8 is powered by the proven SkyActiv-D engine:
- 2.2L Diesel (SkyActiv-D): The default choice. It produces 188 hp and a massive 450 Nm of torque. This torque is crucial for moving 7 people up steep hills. It is efficient, returning 13–15 km/l, but requires strict adherence to clean diesel and DPF maintenance.
- 2.5L Petrol (Rare): Some later models have a non-turbo 2.5L. It feels underpowered for a car of this size and is not recommended unless you strictly do short city trips.
Design & Practicality
The CX-8 is long (4.9 meters), giving it genuine legroom in the second row. The third row is usable for adults on short trips (under 1 hour), unlike the cramped X-Trail. Ground clearance is 200mm, which is excellent. The "L-Package" trims feature Nappa leather and real wood, offering an interior that feels twice the price.
Reliability & Maintenance
The 2.2L Diesel engine had issues in early models (2012-2016), but the 2019 version features improved head gasket designs and cooling. However, carbon buildup in the intake manifold is still a reality of modern diesels; plan for a "de-carbonizing" service every 80,000 km. The 6-speed auto is bulletproof.
