The Toyota Probox is the undisputed king of commercial utility in Uganda. It is a rugged, no-nonsense wagon that powers small businesses, delivery networks, and agricultural logistics across the country. While our original target window spans from 2011 to 2017, the heavily updated XP160 generation (introduced in late 2014) is highly recommended for its modernised dashboard and transmission. Newer models up to 2026 are readily available in the Japanese market—including a highly efficient 1.5L Hybrid version introduced in 2018. However, for buyers importing into Uganda in 2026, the 2018 model is overwhelmingly preferred over the 2017 model due to massive tax advantages. While a 2017 Probox might have a cheaper auction price in Japan, importing it into Uganda will cost you significantly more overall due to age-based environmental tax penalties.

1.5L 1NZ-FE Petrol (Code: NCP51V / NCP160V) RECOMMENDED
This is the legendary workhorse engine. Producing 109 HP, it is practically indestructible, incredibly cheap to maintain, and provides the necessary torque for hauling heavy goods up Kampala's hills.
1.3L 2NZ-FE / 1NR-FE Petrol (Code: NCP50V / NSP160V)
These smaller engines are highly economical but can feel sluggish and strained when the vehicle is fully loaded with cargo.
1.5L 1NZ-FXE Hybrid (Code: NHP160V)
Available on models from 2018 onwards, this hybrid powertrain delivers an outstanding 22.2 km/l. It is excellent for urban couriers, though the hybrid battery adds maintenance complexity for deep upcountry use.
Interior & Practicality
Passenger Comfort: The Probox is unapologetically utilitarian. It features durable, wipe-down materials, a simple dashboard, and flat, basic seating. It is designed for work, not luxury.
Cargo: Exceptional. It boasts a completely flat cargo floor covered in heavy-duty vinyl when the rear bench is folded. It can easily carry a payload of around 400kg, making it perfect for hardware, agricultural produce, or bulk deliveries.
Infotainment & Technology
JDM Head Units: Usually comes with a very basic radio unit tailored for Japanese frequencies. An FM Band Expander or a cheap aftermarket Android screen swap is required.
Security: Because of its immense popularity, the Probox is a massive target for petty parts theft in Kampala. Side mirrors, wheel caps, and exterior lights are frequently stolen. Riveting the mirrors and etching the registration number on all parts is mandatory.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
Economy: 15 - 18 km/l (1.5L Petrol).
Minor Service: UGX 150,000 to 250,000.
Spare Parts: Parts are ubiquitous and extremely cheap in Kisekka Market. It is arguably one of the cheapest vehicles to maintain in all of East Africa.

The Probox is unmatched in reliability; its simple mechanical components are designed to withstand years of abuse. Safety features are basic, typically limited to dual airbags and ABS. Ugandan law strictly mandates that all imported passenger vehicles must be factory-built Right-Hand Drive (RHD).

Import Taxation Strategy: Why 2018 is Better Than 2017
Many buyers fall into a common "Commercial Trap," assuming that because the Probox is a commercial van, it is exempt from the URA environmental levy. This is FALSE.
