The 2024 Tesla Model Y is the car that forced every other manufacturer to play catch-up. Launched in 2020 as the taller, more practical sibling to the Model 3, it became the world's best-selling vehicle in 2023. It offers sports car acceleration, massive cargo space, and the best software in the business. For the Kenyan buyer, it is the most logical EV choice—if you can charge it at home.

Three main versions exist:

• Long Range AWD (75 kWh): 514 HP. RECOMMENDED Offers the best balance of range (approx 533km WLTP) and speed (0-100 in 5.0s). Dual motors mean AWD traction.
• RWD (60 kWh): 295 HP. Lighter and cheaper. Uses LFP battery chemistry which prefers being charged to 100% daily. Good for city use.
• Performance (75 kWh): 527 HP. 0-100 in 3.7s. Comes with 21-inch wheels which ruin the ride quality on Kenyan roads. Avoid unless you value speed over comfort.

• Minimalism: There are no buttons. Everything is on the 15-inch screen. This is clean but frustrating if you want to adjust mirrors or AC while driving.
• Cargo King: The boot is huge (854 Litres), plus a "Frunk" (Front Trunk) for charging cables. The rear seats fold flat for a massive cargo area.

• Charging: You cannot rely on Superchargers in Kenya yet. You need a dedicated wall box at home. A full charge costs roughly Ksh 1,500 - 2,000 depending on electricity tariffs, for ~400km range.
• Service: Near zero. No oil, no filters (except cabin), no spark plugs. Brakes last 100,000km due to regenerative braking.
• Repairs: If you crash it, repairs are a nightmare. Aluminum panels and specialized parts mean waiting months for shipments from Europe/China.

Stiff Ride: The suspension is notoriously stiff, especially on the Performance model. You will feel every ripple on Thika Road. 167mm clearance is better than a sedan but not an SUV. Be very careful with the underfloor battery pack.

Top marks globally for safety. Autopilot (adaptive cruise + lane keep) is standard and works well on marked highways. Build quality varies (panel gaps), but the drivetrain is solid.
