The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE (V167 Facelift) is the gold standard for luxury SUVs. While the lineage started with the ML-Class (W163) in 1997, this 4th Generation (launched in 2019) has been refreshed for 2024 with updated light signatures, a new steering wheel, and electrified engines across the range. It sits perfectly between the agile GLC and the massive GLS, offering optional 7 seats and a ride quality that smooths out even the roughest Kenyan tarmac.

All engines now feature 48V mild-hybrid tech:

• GLE 300d 4MATIC (2.0L Diesel) STANDARD
  269 HP + 20 HP (Boost). The OM654M engine is improved with more power and a 48V ISG starter. It is efficient and punchy enough for daily use.
• GLE 450d 4MATIC (3.0L Diesel)
  367 HP. Replaces the 400d. The torque (750 Nm) is immense. Ideal for towing or high-speed cruising.
• GLE 450 (3.0L Petrol)
  381 HP. The smooth inline-6 petrol option. Quietest of the bunch but thirsty in traffic.

• Updated MBUX: The 2024 model gets the latest MBUX software (NTG7) with improved voice control and a new steering wheel with touch-capacitive buttons (which can be finicky).
• 7-Seat Option: The optional 3rd row is suitable for children only. With all seats up, boot space is minimal. Fold them down, and you have a massive 630L cargo area.

• Consumption: 12–14 km/l (300d). The mild-hybrid system allows for engine-off coasting, improving efficiency.
• Service: High. It requires premium synthetic oils and AdBlue. Air suspension (Airmatic) is comfortable but expensive to repair if struts fail (approx Ksh 150k each).
• Theft: Side mirrors and sensors are high-value targets in Nairobi. Secure them.

• E-Active Body Control: (Optional) This system can bounce the car to free it from sand/mud. Even the standard steel suspension offers 205mm clearance, which is excellent.
• Airmatic: Allows you to raise the car for rough terrain. It is a very capable off-roader if you have the right tyres.

Top marks. Includes Active Brake Assist and Blind Spot Assist. The updated OM654M engine is proving reliable, but the complex 48V electronics system adds a layer of potential failure points over time.

Who is this for? The successful family that wants a do-it-all luxury vehicle for school runs and holidays. Who is it NOT for? Those who find the badge too common—a Range Rover Sport offers more exclusivity (but less reliability).
