The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLA (H247 Facelift) is the entry ticket to the Mercedes SUV club. Originally launched in 2013 as a jacked-up hatchback, this 2nd Generation (introduced in 2020) morphed into a proper SUV. The 2024 Facelift adds body-colored wheel arches (replacing the plastic cladding on some trims) and standard LED lights, giving it a more mature, premium look that mimics the larger GLC.

The 2024 update electrifies the petrol engines:

• GLA 200 (1.3L Turbo): 163 HP. STANDARD Now features a 48V mild-hybrid system. The electric motor adds 10kW boost for smoother overtaking. It is punchy enough for city use but strains at 140km/h.
• GLA 250 (2.0L Turbo): 224 HP. Comes with 4MATIC. Much smoother and faster, but rare in Kenya due to tax brackets.
• GLA 200d (2.0L Diesel): 150 HP. The efficiency choice. 400Nm of torque makes it feel faster than the figures suggest.

• Dual Screens: Standard 10.25-inch screens with the latest MBUX software (NTG7). Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto is finally standard.
• Space: Rear legroom is surprisingly good (better than the A-Class hatch). The boot is 435 Litres—adequate for groceries but tight for a family holiday.

• Consumption: 14–16 km/l (GLA 200). The mild-hybrid tech improves city mileage by turning off the engine before you come to a complete stop.
• Service: It is a Mercedes. Routine service A/B is costly. The 7-speed DCT gearbox needs specific fluid changes. Do not ignore the "Service B" warnings.
• Parts: Shares mechanicals with the A-Class and B-Class, so filters and pads are available. Body parts (bumpers, lights) are expensive.

City Crossover: With 183mm of ground clearance, it handles Nairobi's speed bumps better than the CLA or A-Class. However, it is not an off-roader. The 4MATIC system is designed for slippery tarmac, not deep mud. The suspension is tuned for comfort.

5-Star Euro NCAP rating. Includes Active Lane Keeping Assist and Parking Package with a 360-degree camera. Reliability of the 1.3L M282 engine is solid, but ensure the mild-hybrid battery system is checked during service.

Who is this for? The city dweller who wants the ride height of an SUV with the parking footprint of a hatchback. Who is it NOT for? Those expecting a "real" Mercedes SUV feel—it drives like a raised A-Class.
