The 2024 Lexus UX (Urban Explorer) is the gateway to the Lexus brand. First introduced in 2018 (ZA10 generation), it brought Lexus quietness to the compact crossover segment. The 2024 update is significant: it introduces the UX 300h powertrain (replacing the 250h in most markets), featuring the 5th Generation Hybrid System with more power and a lighter lithium-ion battery. Crucially, the frustrating touchpad controller is gone, replaced by a modern touchscreen.

The 2024 model brings the new 5th Gen Hybrid tech:

• UX 300h (2.0L Hybrid): 196 HP. RECOMMENDED Replaces the UX 250h. Uses the M20A-FXS engine with upgraded motors. It is 15 HP more powerful and faster (0-100 in 8.1s) while maintaining exceptional efficiency.
• UX 300e (Electric): 201 HP. The EV version. Range improved to ~450km (WLTP). Great for city driving, but charging infrastructure in Kenya is still nascent.

• No Touchpad: The center console has been redesigned. The infotainment screen (8.0 or 12.3 inches) is now touch-operated and moved closer to the driver. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay.
• Compact Dimensions: Rear legroom is tight for adults. The boot is small (approx 320L), significantly smaller than a BMW X1. It is a car for singles or couples, not families.

• Consumption: 18–22 km/l. The hybrid system is unmatched in stop-start Nairobi traffic.
• Service: It is a Lexus, so it shares many parts with the Toyota C-HR and Corolla Cross. Maintenance is cheaper than German rivals.
• Battery: The new Lithium-ion battery is lighter and more energy-dense than the old Nickel-Metal Hydride. It should last the life of the car.

City Crossover: At 160mm clearance, it is higher than a sedan but not an off-roader. It handles speed bumps well. The tight turning radius (5.2m) makes it incredibly agile in U-turns and parking lots.

Comes with Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 (Pre-Collision with pedestrian detection, Lane Tracing Assist). Reliability is expected to be top-tier, consistently ranking high in JD Power surveys.

Who is this for? The city dweller who wants the reliability of a Toyota C-HR but with better sound insulation and badge prestige. Who is it NOT for? Young families with strollers—the boot is tiny.
