2024 Honda WR-V: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2024 Honda WR-V is the new SUV every Kenyan has been asking for. Launched in Japan in December 2023, it is designed to be cheaper and boxier than the Vezel. Unlike the complex hybrid Vezel, the WR-V sticks to a simple petrol engine and a high ground clearance of 195mm. It is essentially a "Japan-Spec" Honda Elevate, built to offer maximum practicality for minimum price. It is the first generation of this model name in the JDM market.
Quick Specs
Engine Options & Model Codes
Simplicity is the key here. There is only one engine choice for the Japanese market:
- 1.5L i-VTEC (L15D): 118 HP / 142 Nm. STANDARD This is the same reliable engine found in the Honda City and Fit. It is paired with a G-Design Shift CVT that simulates gear steps for a more engaging feel. No hybrid option exists yet, which keeps the price and maintenance complexity low.
Interior & Practicality
- Massive Boot: With 458 Litres of boot space, it beats the Vezel (390L) and Yaris Cross (390L). It fits two large suitcases easily.
- High Seating: The driving position is commanding, with a square bonnet visible from the driver's seat—perfect for judging corners in Nairobi traffic.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- Consumption: 16–17 km/l. It is not a hybrid, so don't expect 25 km/l, but it is very respectable for a boxy SUV.
- Service: The L15D engine is one of the most common Honda engines globally. Parts are cheap and mechanics understand it well. No high-voltage battery to worry about.
- Tyres: Uses standard 215/60R16 or 215/55R17 tyres. Widely available sizes in Kenya.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
Ground Clearance: At 195mm, it is fantastic. It clears speed bumps and rough estate roads better than most crossovers. The suspension is tuned for comfort on broken tarmac (since it was developed for India/ASEAN roads), making it ideal for Kenya.
Safety & Reliability
Comes standard with Honda Sensing (Collision Mitigation, Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise). Reliability is expected to be excellent due to the simple powertrain.
