The 2024 BMW iX is the boldest car BMW has made in decades. Launched in 2021, it is not an electric X5; it is a bespoke EV built on an aluminum spaceframe with a Carbon Cage (CFRP) upper structure. The styling is polarizing (that vertical grille), but the interior is widely considered the best in the industry. It is a "rolling lounge" designed for silent, effortless travel.

Three distinct flavors of performance:

• xDrive40 (71 kWh Net): 326 HP. Range ~425km. Good for city use, but the range is tight for long Kenyan road trips without planning.
• xDrive50 (105 kWh Net): 523 HP. RECOMMENDED The sweet spot. Massive range (630km WLTP, ~500km real world) and blistering speed (0-100 in 4.6s).
• M60 (105 kWh Net): 619 HP. The M version. 0-100 in 3.8s. Insanely fast but rides firmer.

• Shy Tech: Buttons are hidden. The wood panel on the center console has backlit touch controls. The infotainment is a massive curved display running iDrive 8.5.
• Lounge Feel: No transmission tunnel means a flat floor. The seats are like armchairs. The hexagonal steering wheel allows a better view of the instruments.

• Charging: Supports up to 200kW DC charging. The massive battery in the xDrive50 takes a long time to charge on a standard domestic socket—a wallbox is mandatory.
• Service: Low maintenance powertrain. However, the Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) chassis structure is expensive to repair in a major accident.
• Grille: The kidney grille is "self-healing." Minor scratches disappear with heat (sunlight). It houses the radar and sensors.

Air Suspension: Standard on xDrive50. It provides a wafting ride quality that smooths out Nairobi potholes better than almost any other SUV. 202mm clearance is decent, but the 22-inch wheels are vulnerable to sidewall damage.

5-Star Euro NCAP. It is one of the safest cars on the planet. The Carbon Cage provides immense structural integrity. Reliability of the EV powertrain has been solid, with few reported issues compared to early Teslas.

Who is this for? The early adopter who wants the absolute best interior experience and ride comfort, regardless of exterior styling. Who is it NOT for? Traditionalists who think a grille should be functional and not a plastic shield.
