2024 Audi A1: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2024 Audi A1 (GB Sportback) is proof that you can downsize without downgrading. While the 1st Generation (8X) launched in 2010 established the premium supermini segment, this 2nd Generation (launched 2018) is strictly a 5-door "Sportback." It shares the MQB-A0 platform with the VW Polo but adds aggressive styling (those three slits under the hood pay homage to the original Audi Quattro) and a digital-first interior.
Quick Specs
Engine Options & Model Codes
The A1 comes only with petrol engines:
- 25 TFSI / 30 TFSI (1.0L Turbo): 95 HP / 110 HP. STANDARD The 3-cylinder engine is punchy and charismatic. The "30 TFSI" is the best balance of economy and power for city driving.
- 35 TFSI (1.5L Turbo): 150 HP. Features cylinder deactivation. Much faster, but makes the front wheels spin easily.
Interior & Practicality
- Digital Native: Even the base model gets a fully digital instrument cluster and an 8.8-inch MMI touchscreen. It feels like a miniature A8 inside.
- Space: Rear legroom is tight for adults (it is a small car), but better than a Mini. Boot space is 335 Litres, which is respectable for the class.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- Consumption: 16–18 km/l (1.0L). It is very frugal if driven sensibly.
- Service: Shares parts with the VW Polo and T-Cross, so filters and brake pads are available. However, body panels and lights are Audi-specific and pricey.
- S-Tronic: The 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox can be jerky at low speeds in traffic. It requires regular fluid changes.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
City Only: At 121mm, ground clearance is very low. S-Line models are even lower. It is strictly for paved roads in places like Kileleshwa or Westlands. Do not take it off-road.
Safety & Reliability
5-Star Euro NCAP rating. Comes with Audi Pre Sense Front (collision warning). Reliability is good as it uses the proven MQB platform components.

The Ci Verdict
Who is this for? The brand-conscious buyer who wants the cheapest entry into the "Four Rings" club without sacrificing tech. Who is it NOT for? Value seekers—a VW Polo costs significantly less for the same mechanicals.
