The 2023 Tesla Model Y is the car that ate the world. In 2023, it officially became the best-selling vehicle globally, overtaking the Toyota RAV4. Why? Because it offers the performance of a sports car, the space of an SUV, and the running costs of a scooter. Launched in 2020, it shares 75% of its parts with the Model 3 but fixes the sedan's biggest flaw: the boot opening. It is a hatchback, it sits higher, and it fits a Kenyan family perfectly.

Three main versions:

• Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): 295 HP. STANDARD Uses the LFP battery (approx 60 kWh). Range ~455km. It is slower but cheaper and the LFP battery can be charged to 100% daily without degradation.
• Long Range AWD: 384 HP. Dual motors, larger battery (approx 78 kWh). Range ~533km. The sweet spot for Kenyan roads due to AWD traction.
• Performance: 527 HP. 0-100 in 3.5s. Comes with 21-inch wheels and lowered suspension. Too stiff for most Nairobi roads.

• Minimalist: No buttons, just a 15-inch screen and a steering wheel. It takes getting used to. The glass roof creates an airy feel but can get hot under the Equator sun (get a roof shade).
• Cargo King: The boot is massive (854 Litres) plus a deep sub-trunk and a "Frunk" (front trunk). It carries more than a Harrier or CX-5.

• Heat Pump: All Model Ys come with a heat pump (Octovalve), which is crucial for efficiency. It manages battery and cabin temp with minimal energy loss.
• Service: Near zero. No oil, no filters, no plugs. Just washer fluid and tyres. Brake pads last 100k+ km due to regenerative braking.
• Charging: Home charging is a must. A wall connector charges it overnight for less than Ksh 1,000 worth of tokens.

Comfort Suspension: Early models (2020-22) had very stiff suspension. The 2023 update introduced "Comfort Suspension" which is much better at soaking up bumps. 167mm clearance is okay for tarmac but avoid rocky trails. The battery is the lowest point.

5-Star Safety Rating in every category. The rigid battery pack in the floor makes it almost impossible to roll over. Autopilot is standard (adaptive cruise + lane keep) and works well on marked highways like the Expressway.
