2023 Renault Captur: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2023 Renault Captur is the crossover you buy with your heart. First launched in 2013, the original Captur was a sales hit but felt cheap inside. This 2nd Generation (introduced 2019) fixes that completely. It sits on the modern CMF-B platform (shared with the Nissan Juke) and features a cabin quality that rivals Audi. With its two-tone "floating roof" paint jobs and C-shaped LED lights, it is arguably the best-looking small SUV on the road.
Quick Specs
Engine Options & Model Codes
The Captur benefits from a German heart:
- 1.3L Turbo (TCe 130): 130 HP / 240 Nm. STANDARD This engine was co-developed with Mercedes-Benz (found in the A-Class). It is smooth, punchy, and surprisingly efficient. Paired with a 7-speed EDC (Dual Clutch).
- 1.6L E-Tech Hybrid: 145 HP. A full hybrid system (non-plug-in). Starts in electric mode every time. Excellent for city traffic.
Interior & Practicality
- Floating Console: The "Flying Console" (on automatic models) creates space underneath for storage and looks futuristic. The 9.3-inch portrait touchscreen is responsive and clear.
- Sliding Rear Bench: The rear seat slides forward and backward by 16cm. You can choose between massive legroom or a massive 536L boot. This flexibility puts it ahead of the Mazda CX-3.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- Consumption: 15–17 km/l (1.3L Turbo). The aerodynamics and efficient engine make it cheap to run.
- Service: Renault Kenya (Caetano) supports the brand. Parts are available, but body panels can be expensive and slow to import if you crash.
- EDC Gearbox: The Dual Clutch transmission is fast but can be jerky in stop-start traffic if not treated gently. Avoid "creeping" without throttle.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
City Crossover: At 174mm clearance, it is decent for speed bumps but not an off-roader. It is FWD only (no AWD option). The ride is compliant and comfortable, soaking up Nairobi's rough patches better than the stiffer Nissan Juke.
Safety & Reliability
5-Star Euro NCAP rating. Standard features include Lane Keep Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition. Reliability of the 1.3L engine is solid (proven in Mercedes models), but electrical glitches with the infotainment are occasionally reported.

The Ci Verdict
Who is this for? The urbanite who wants a car that looks like a concept sketch and drives with European sophistication. Who is it NOT for? Those who equate "French car" with "headache"—buy a Toyota Yaris Cross if you want zero drama (and zero soul).
