The 2023 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon (S213) is the aristocrat of family haulers. While SUVs like the GLE are popular, the E-Class Estate offers better handling, better fuel economy, and a boot that is longer and more practical for loading. The 2023 model (Facelift) features the updated front end with flatter headlights and the MBUX touchscreen system. Crucially, all E-Class Wagons come with rear air suspension as standard, ensuring the car stays level even when loaded with 600kg of cargo.

For Kenya, the diesel engines are the primary choice:

• E 220d (2.0L Diesel): 194 HP / 400 Nm. RECOMMENDED The OM654 engine is the gold standard for efficiency and power. It can easily return 18 km/l on the highway while cruising at 120 km/h.
• E 300de (Diesel Hybrid): 306 HP (Combined). A plug-in hybrid diesel. Offers incredible power but the battery eats into the boot space (reduces it to 480L) and adds complexity. Avoid unless you understand PHEV maintenance.
• E 450 4MATIC (3.0L Petrol): 362 HP. Inline-6 with EQ Boost. Silky smooth but thirsty.

• The Boot: 640 Litres seats up, 1,820 Litres seats down. It is cavernous. The load lip is low, making it easy to slide in heavy boxes or luggage.
• Widescreen Cockpit: The dual 12.3-inch screens are standard on most imports. The capacitive steering wheel detects your hands for the driver assist systems.

• Consumption: 15–18 km/l (E 220d). Exceptional range (over 1,000km per tank).
• Service: The OM654 engine is reliable but requires AdBlue and quality diesel. The 9G-TRONIC gearbox is sealed for life (but change fluid at 100k km). Rear air bellows are a wear item—expect to replace them every 8-10 years.
• Parts: Body panels for the wagon (tailgate, rear glass) are specific and harder to find than the sedan. Mechanical parts are identical to the W213 sedan.

All-Terrain Option: The standard wagon has 135mm clearance, which is low. However, the E-Class All-Terrain version adds 29mm of clearance (total ~160mm), plastic cladding, and 4MATIC. If you can find an All-Terrain, it is the perfect Kenyan luxury car. Otherwise, stick to tarmac with the standard wagon.

Top marks for safety. Active Brake Assist is standard. The W213/S213 platform has proven to be very robust, with fewer electronic gremlins than the previous generation. The 2.0L diesel is widely used in taxis in Europe, proving its durability.
