The 2023 Mazda MX-30 is a piece of automotive art. Launched in 2020 as Mazda's first standalone electrified model, it pays homage to the RX-8 with its "Freestyle" suicide doors. While available as a pure EV, the model that makes the most sense for Kenya is the Mild Hybrid (e-Skyactiv G) version. It offers the stunning coupe-like design and eco-friendly cork interior without the range anxiety of the small-battery EV version.

Three powertrains exist, but one is the winner for importers:

• 2.0L e-Skyactiv G (Mild Hybrid): 156 HP. RECOMMENDED A 24V mild-hybrid system paired with the reliable 2.0L petrol engine. It drives like a normal car but with smoother stop-start. Best for Kenya.
• EV Model: 145 HP. 35.5 kWh battery. Range is only ~200km. Great for a second city car, but limiting for travel.
• R-EV (Rotary PHEV): 170 HP. Uses a rotary engine as a generator. Complex and rare.

• Cork Console: Mazda started as a cork manufacturer in 1920. The MX-30 features real cork trim on the floating console. It is unique, sustainable, and beautiful.
• Suicide Doors: The rear doors open backwards. There is no B-pillar, creating a huge opening. However, you must open the front door first to open the rear. Rear windows do not roll down.

• Consumption: 14–16 km/l (Mild Hybrid). Comparable to a CX-30 or CX-5.
• Service: The 2.0L Skyactiv engine is well-known in Kenya (CX-5/Atenza). Parts are available. Body parts (especially those unique doors) will be hard to find if damaged.
• Resale: It is a niche design. Resale might be slower than a conventional CX-30, but it appeals to design-conscious buyers.

Jinba Ittai: Like all Mazdas, it handles beautifully. The steering is precise and the ride is composed. 180mm clearance is decent for speed bumps. It is FWD only (Mild Hybrid), so stick to tarmac or light gravel.

Who is this for? The architect or designer who wants a car that looks like a concept sketch and drives with Mazda flair. Who is it NOT for? Families with small children—buckling them into the back seat through the suicide doors in a tight parking spot is a nightmare.
