2023 Jeep Compass: A Carimports.co.ke Review

The Big Picture

The 2023 Jeep Compass is the car that finally gets the interior it deserves. While the 1st Generation debuted in 2006 (and was widely criticized), this 2nd Generation (MP) launched in 2017 brought real Jeep DNA. However, the 2022/23 Facelift is the game changer. It introduces a completely new, premium dashboard with a floating screen and, crucially, a new 2.0L Turbo engine (in some markets) that fixes the lethargy of the old 2.4L. It is now a proper "Baby Grand Cherokee."

Engine Options & Model Codes

The 2023 update brought modern power to the lineup:

  • 2.0L Turbo (GME T4): 200 HP / 300 Nm. RECOMMENDED Replaced the old 2.4L Tigershark. It is punchy, responsive, and paired with a smooth 8-speed automatic. It transforms the car.
  • 1.3L Turbo (FireFly): 150 HP. Common in European/Japanese imports. Efficient but works hard to move the heavy chassis. Good for city use.

Interior & Practicality

  • New Dashboard: Gone are the cheap, hard plastics. The 2023 model features a stitched leatherette dash, a 10.1-inch floating Uconnect 5 screen, and a digital driver display. It finally feels premium.
  • Space: Rear legroom is decent for the class. The boot (438 Litres) is square and practical, fitting holiday luggage easily.

Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs

  • Consumption: 10–12 km/l (2.0L Turbo). The turbo engine is more efficient than the old 2.4L because you don't have to floor it to merge.
  • Service: Jeep parts are specialized. The 2.0L engine is shared with the Wrangler and Alfa Romeo Giulia, so knowledge is growing, but expect higher maintenance costs than a RAV4.
  • Resale: Jeeps have a cult following, but the Compass depreciates faster than the Wrangler. Buy wisely.

Suitability for Kenyan Roads

Trail Rated: The Trailhawk version is a genuine off-roader with 216mm clearance, skid plates, and a 20:1 crawl ratio. Even the standard 4x4 models have "Selec-Terrain" (Snow/Sand/Mud modes) which actually works. It handles Kenyan mud far better than a Harrier.

Safety & Reliability

Standard Active Lane Management and Blind Spot Monitoring. The new 2.0L engine is proving reliable, but Jeep electronics (screen freezing) can be quirky. Always check for software updates.

The Ci Verdict

Who is this for? The adventurer who wants a compact SUV that can actually go off-road on weekends. Who is it NOT for? The budget driver—fuel and parts will be higher than a CR-V or Forester.
