The 2023 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe (G16 LCI) is the automotive equivalent of a shark in a suit. Revived in 2018 to replace the 6 Series, the 8 Series nameplate dates back to the legendary E31 of 1990. This facelift model (LCI) introduces the "Iconic Glow" illuminated grille and a massive 12.3-inch infotainment screen. It is wider, lower, and meaner than the 7 Series, designed for the driver who wants presence without the chauffeur vibes.

Only the best engines make it into the 8 Series:

• 840i (3.0L Inline-6 Turbo): 340 HP. RECOMMENDED The B58 engine is legendary for a reason. It is smooth, reliable, and plenty fast (0-100 in 5.2s). It balances performance with reasonable running costs.
• M850i (4.4L V8 Twin-Turbo): 530 HP. A monster. 0-100 in 3.9s. The V8 rumble is addictive, but maintenance and fuel costs are in supercar territory.

• Carbon Core: The chassis uses carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the roof, tunnel, and pillars. This reduces weight and lowers the center of gravity, making it handle like a much smaller car.
• 4+1 Seating: Technically it seats 5, but the middle rear seat is a joke. It is straddling a huge console. It is effectively a luxurious 4-seater with sporty bucket seats in the back.

• Consumption: 9–11 km/l (840i). Respectable for a grand tourer. The M850i will struggle to see 7 km/l in the city.
• Service: This is a flagship BMW. Parts are shared with the 7 Series and X7. Brake pads, laser headlights, and suspension components carry premium pricing.
• Tyres: Uses mixed-width tyres on 20-inch rims. Run-flats are standard, which are expensive to replace and harsh on potholes.

Low Clearance: At 128mm, it hugs the ground. It is strictly a highway car. Speed bumps must be taken at an angle. The long wheelbase (3 meters) makes it prone to scraping its belly on steep ramps. Drive with extreme caution in the CBD.

Comes with the full suite of BMW safety tech (Laserlights, Night Vision optional). The B58 engine in the 840i is widely considered one of the most reliable modern BMW engines. The V8 in the M850i requires meticulous care to avoid cooling system issues.
