The 2022 Jeep Wrangler (JL) is the most capable SUV you can buy off the showroom floor, period. While the Wrangler nameplate debuted in 1986 (replacing the CJ), the JL generation (launched in 2018) is a quantum leap forward. It retains the solid axles and removable doors but adds a modern interior, aluminum panels to save weight, and an 8-speed gearbox that makes it actually drivable on the highway. In Kenya, it is the ultimate status symbol that backs up its looks with real ability.

The JL offers two main powertrains for our market:

• 2.0L Turbo (GME T4): 270 HP / 400 Nm. RECOMMENDED Lighter and punchier than the V6. It has more torque low down, which is great for crawling or city traffic.
• 3.6L V6 (Pentastar): 285 HP / 353 Nm. The classic choice. Linear power delivery and simpler mechanics, but feels lazy compared to the turbo.

• Waterproof: The interior is designed to be washed out. It has drain plugs in the floor. The touchscreen (Uconnect 4) is water-resistant.
• Noise: It is loud. Even with the hardtop, wind noise is significant above 100km/h because you are driving a brick. The "Sky One-Touch" power top is convenient but adds more noise.

• Consumption: 7–9 km/l. Aerodynamics of a garden shed means it drinks fuel on the highway.
• Service: Jeep parts are expensive in Kenya. You need a specialist mechanic who understands solid axles and American electronics.
• Modifications: The temptation to modify is high. Be warned: huge tyres and lift kits will destroy the fuel economy and handling.

Rubicon vs Sahara: The Sahara is better for daily driving with street tyres and side steps. The Rubicon has locking differentials, disconnecting sway bars, and aggressive tyres. It is overkill for the school run but unbeatable in the Aberdares. Both handle potholes with contempt.

3-Star Euro NCAP. It is not the safest family car due to its body-on-frame design and removable parts. Reliability of the JL is better than the JK, but "death wobble" (steering shake) can still occur if suspension components wear out.

Who is this for? The adventurer who actually leaves the tarmac, or the city dweller who wants the coolest convertible SUV on the market. Who is it NOT for? Those who prioritize ride comfort and quietness—a Defender L663 is far more refined.
