2022 BMW i4: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2022 BMW i4 is the electric car that doesn't feel like a science experiment. Origin: Germany (Munich). First Generation: Launched in 2021/2022 (G26). Current Generation: 1st Generation. It shares its body with the 4 Series Gran Coupe, meaning it looks handsome and conventional. Unlike the Tesla Model 3 which requires learning a new way of driving, the i4 has normal door handles, a start button, and drives with that classic BMW weight and precision.
Quick Specs
Powertrain Options
Two key models:
- i4 eDrive40 (RWD): 335 HP / 430 Nm. STANDARD Classic rear-wheel drive. 0-100 in 5.7 seconds. This is the range champion, capable of nearly 600km (WLTP). It feels lighter and purer to drive.
- i4 M50 (AWD): 536 HP / 795 Nm. The first electric car from the M division. Dual motors, insane acceleration (3.9s), but heavy (2.3 tonnes).
Interior & Practicality
- Curved Display: The i4 introduced the massive curved display (12.3" + 14.9") running iDrive 8. It looks spectacular but moves climate controls to the screen (a step back in usability).
- Hatchback Boot: Unlike the 3 Series sedan, the i4 has a rear hatch. The 470-litre boot is wide and accessible, easily swallowing luggage or a folded bicycle.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- Charging: 205kW DC charging (10-80% in 31 mins). Home charging at 11kW is standard.
- Rear Air Suspension: Standard on all i4 models to manage the battery weight. This gives it a smoother ride than a petrol 4 Series, but air struts are a long-term maintenance item.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
Low Clearance: The battery hangs low, giving it a clearance of just 125mm. You must be extremely careful on speed bumps to avoid scraping the battery pack. The M50 on 20-inch wheels is harsh on potholes; stick to the 18 or 19-inch wheels of the eDrive40.

Who is this for? The BMW loyalist who is ready to go electric but hates the look and feel of "weird" EVs like the Tesla Model 3. Who is it NOT for? Rear passengers over 6 feet—the coupe roofline cuts into headroom.
