The 2021 Volvo V90 is the antidote to the aggressive German executive estate. While the V90 nameplate debuted back in 1996 as a boxy brick, this 2nd Generation (launched in 2016) is arguably the most beautiful estate car on sale today. The 2021 update is significant because it introduced the "B-Series" mild-hybrid engines and a Google-based infotainment system, refining an already sophisticated package for the Kenyan executive who values safety over 0-100 times.

The 2021 update replaced the "T" and "D" engines with "B" (Brake Energy Regeneration) mild hybrids:

• B4 (Petrol MHEV): 197 HP. STANDARD A 2.0L Turbo with a 48-volt battery. It is smoother than the old T4, offering seamless stop-start operation in traffic.
• B5 (Diesel MHEV): 235 HP. The long-distance champion. Massive torque (480 Nm) makes overtaking on the Mombasa Highway effortless.

• Scandinavian Sanctuary: The cabin uses open-pore driftwood and Orrefors crystal (on Inscription trims). It feels like a high-end furniture showroom, distinct from the technical coldness of an Audi.
• Boot Space: The 560L boot is long and flat. While the sloping rear glass cuts into ultimate volume compared to a boxy V70, it is still huge.

• Consumption: 12–14 km/l (B4 Petrol) vs 16–18 km/l (B5 Diesel). The mild-hybrid system reduces consumption by about 15% in the city.
• Service: Volvo parts are expensive in Kenya and harder to source than Mercedes/BMW. You must have a specialist mechanic. Electronic issues (Sensus screen freezing) are the most common complaint.
• Resale: Lower than German rivals. This makes it an excellent value used buy, but expect depreciation if you buy new.

Cross Country vs Standard: The standard V90 has 153mm clearance, which is low for Kenyan speed bumps. If you can, find the V90 Cross Country (CC). It has 210mm of clearance, rugged cladding, and AWD as standard—it is the perfect luxury car for Kenyan roads.

It is a Volvo. City Safety (autonomous braking, large animal detection, run-off-road protection) is standard on all models. It is arguably the safest car in its class.
