2021 Toyota Mirai: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2021 Toyota Mirai is a stunning car with a massive caveat. This 2nd Generation model (launched December 2020) ditched the ugly, Prius-based FWD layout of the 1st Gen (2014) for the premium RWD platform of the Lexus LS. It is beautiful, luxurious, and drives like a dream. HOWEVER: It runs on Hydrogen fuel cells. There are currently virtually zero commercial hydrogen filling stations in Kenya. This review is for collectors, technology demonstrators, or those with private hydrogen access.
Quick Specs
The Hydrogen System
How it works: The Mirai has three high-pressure tanks holding 5.6kg of hydrogen gas. The fuel cell stack mixes hydrogen with oxygen from the air to create electricity, which powers the rear motor. The only exhaust emission is pure water.
- The Problem: You cannot plug it in to charge. You cannot pour petrol in it. You MUST pump hydrogen gas at 700 bar pressure. Without a filling station, the car is a static sculpture.
Interior & Practicality
- Lexus Quality: The interior is almost identical to a Lexus. Soft-touch leather, bronze accents, and a whisper-quiet cabin. It feels like a Ksh 10M car inside.
- Compromised Space: The massive hydrogen tanks run down the center tunnel and under the rear seats. This means the boot is small (321 Litres) and the rear seats don't fold down.
Driving Experience
Silent Luxury: Driving the Mirai is surreal. It glides. The 50:50 weight distribution and RWD layout give it excellent balance. It is not fast (0-100 in 9.2s), but the torque is instant and smooth. It filters out air pollution as it drives, literally cleaning the air in Nairobi.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
Clearance: At 150mm, it is low but manageable. The real suitability issue is FUEL. Unless you are KenGen or TotalEnergies running a pilot project, you cannot drive this car. We have seen a few units imported by hopeful buyers who didn't realize it's not a plug-in hybrid.
Safety & Reliability
The hydrogen tanks are made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic and are bulletproof (literally tested against bullets). It is incredibly safe. Reliability of the Toyota fuel cell stack is proven, but servicing it in Kenya is impossible without specialized technicians.
💰 2021 Toyota Mirai Price in Kenya
The following are average showroom prices for fresh imports. *Warning: Resale value is near zero due to lack of fuel.*
| Trim Level | Import Cost | Showroom Price | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| G (Base) | Ksh 2.5M | Ksh 3.0M | Ksh 500,000 |
| Z Executive | Ksh 3.0M | Ksh 3.5M | Ksh 500,000 |
The Ci Verdict
Who is this for? Technology institutions, government agencies, or collectors who want to showcase the future of energy. Who is it NOT for? Everyone else. You literally cannot drive it in Kenya right now.
