The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLA (H247) is a hot hatch on stilts. Origin: Germany (Rastatt). It replaces the cramped first generation with a taller, roomier, and vastly more aggressive machine. Available in "warm" GLA 35 and "scalding hot" GLA 45 S flavors, it brings the legendary performance of the A45 AMG to a package that can actually clear a Kenyan speed bump.

The most powerful 4-cylinder in production:

• GLA 35 4MATIC (M260)
  306 HP. The "entry" AMG. It is fast, fun, and capable. It uses a 7-speed dual-clutch. Good for daily driving.
• GLA 45 S 4MATIC+ (M139) STANDARD
  421 HP. Hand-built by one man in Affalterbach. It features an 8-speed DCT and a clever rear differential that can send 100% of torque to a single rear wheel (Drift Mode). It is a weapon.

• Dual Screens: The "widescreen cockpit" (two 10.25-inch screens under one glass) looks futuristic. The AMG steering wheel features dedicated knobs for changing drive modes on the fly.
• Rear Space: Unlike the old GLA, adults can actually sit in the back of this one. The rear seats slide by 140mm to prioritize legroom or boot space (435 Litres).

Runs MBUX with "Hey Mercedes" voice control. The AMG Track Pace app is standard on the 45 S, allowing you to record lap times and telemetry data if you take it to a track day.

• Consumption: 8–10 km/l. If you use the performance, expect 5 km/l.
• Service: The M139 engine is highly stressed (210 HP per litre!). Frequent oil changes (every 5,000km) with high-grade synthetic are non-negotiable.

• Clearance: 143mm. It is higher than the A45, but it is still low. It handles tarmac ripples well but is not an off-roader.
• Suspension: The AMG Ride Control suspension is firm, even in "Comfort" mode. It offers zero body roll but will crash over sharp potholes.

5-Star Euro NCAP. Reliability of the new generation is good, but the complex dual-clutch transmission can overheat if you spend too much time in crawling traffic.

Who is this for? The young professional who wants A45 performance but needs to clear the driveway hump. Who is it NOT for? Those expecting a soft, luxury ride—it is stiff.
