The 2020 Volkswagen Up! is the city car for people who love driving. Launched in 2011, it brought German solidity to the budget segment. Production ended in 2023, making these late-model units highly desirable. Unlike the tinny feel of some rivals, the Up! feels substantial on the road. It sits on the NSF platform, shared with the Skoda Citigo and SEAT Mii, but the VW badge holds value best in Kenya.

Simplicity rules here:

• 1.0L MPI (EA211): 60 HP or 75 HP. STANDARD A non-turbo 3-cylinder engine. It is robust and simple. Paired with a 5-speed manual or the notorious ASG (automated manual).
• 1.0L TSI (GTI): 115 HP. Turbocharged rocket. Available in the Up! GTI. It transforms the car into a highway weapon, but they are rare and pricey.

• Minimalist Chic: The dashboard often features body-colored panels. It feels modern and airy. The smartphone dock on the dash allows you to use your phone as the infotainment screen—clever and future-proof.
• Space: Front space is class-leading. Rear space is tight but usable for short trips. The boot (251 Litres) has a false floor for versatility.

• Consumption: 18–22 km/l. The light weight (approx 900kg) ensures excellent economy.
• Transmission Warning: The ASG (Automated Shift Gearbox) is NOT a conventional automatic. It is a robotized manual. It shifts slowly and jerks if you don't lift off the throttle. Many drivers hate it. Test drive before you buy, or stick to the manual.
• Service: Parts are available via VW specialists. The timing belt interval is long (up to 240,000km or 10 years for original belts), which reduces running costs.

Solid Feel: At 144mm, clearance is low. However, the suspension is well-damped and feels more solid over potholes than a Vitz or Demio. It doesn't rattle as much. Just take speed bumps slowly to avoid scraping the front lip.

5-Star Euro NCAP (2011), later revised to 3 stars due to lack of standard electronic aids on base models. However, the rigid safety cell is excellent. Mechanically robust, but the ASG gearbox clutch actuator can be a failure point.
