2020 Suzuki Baleno: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2020 Suzuki Baleno is the rational alternative to the sporty Swift. While the Swift is designed for drivers, the Baleno is designed for passengers. The original Baleno from 1995 was a sedan/wagon, but this modern iteration (launched in 2015, facelifted in 2019) is a "wide-body" hatchback. It sits on the lightweight HEARTECT platform but offers significantly more shoulder room and boot space than other cars in its price bracket.
Quick Specs
Engine Options & Model Codes
Two engines are common in Kenya (UK/Japan imports vs India imports):
- 1.2L DualJet (K12C): 90 HP. STANDARD Reliable, chain-driven, and very frugal. Pairs with a CVT. This is the engine found in most "Maruti" units and JDM imports.
- 1.0L BoosterJet (K10C): 110 HP. A 3-cylinder turbo found in UK/European imports. It is punchy and fun but requires higher quality fuel and stricter oil changes.
Interior & Practicality
- Cabin Width: The Baleno feels noticeably wider inside than a Demio or Vitz. Three adults can squeeze into the back for short trips without overlapping shoulders too much.
- Boot Space: At 339 Litres, the boot is huge for a hatchback. It easily swallows two large suitcases, making it a great Uber option for airport runs.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- Consumption: 18–21 km/l (1.2L). It is incredibly light (under 1,000kg), which aids efficiency.
- Service: Parts are cheap and widely available thanks to the strong Maruti Suzuki presence in Kenya. It shares many consumables with the Swift.
- Build Quality: The plastics are hard and scratchy. It feels "built to a price" compared to a VW Polo, but it is durable.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
Low Rider: Clearance varies between 120mm (JDM) and 145mm (Export). JDM units are very low and will scrape on bumps. We recommend installing 20mm spacers if you buy a JDM unit. The suspension is soft and compliant.
Safety & Reliability
4-Star Euro NCAP rating (with safety pack). JDM models often lack side airbags found in European models. Mechanically, it is bulletproof. The K-series engines are known to run forever with basic maintenance.

The Ci Verdict
Who is this for? The Uber driver or young family who needs maximum interior space and fuel economy for the lowest price. Who is it NOT for? Those who frequent rough roads—ground clearance is its Achilles heel.
