The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS (X167) is unequivocally the "S-Class of SUVs." While the lineage began with the GL-Class (X164) in 2006, this 3rd Generation X167 (launched in 2019/2020) pushes the boundaries of luxury. It is longer, wider, and smarter than before, featuring MBUX tech and mild-hybrid EQ Boost systems. For the Kenyan elite, it is the ultimate statement of arrival, combining 7-seat practicality with limousine comfort.

Two engines dominate the Kenyan import market:

• GLS 400d (2.9L Diesel): 330 HP / 700 Nm. RECOMMENDED The OM656 inline-6 diesel is a powerhouse. It offers massive torque for towing or climbing hills while returning respectable fuel economy.
• GLS 580 / 450 (Petrol + EQ Boost): 362 - 489 HP. These feature 48-volt mild-hybrid systems. They are smoother and quieter than the diesel but drink fuel at an alarming rate in Nairobi traffic.

• 3rd Row Comfort: Unlike many 7-seaters, the 3rd row in the GLS fits adults up to 6ft tall comfortably. The seats are heated and have their own USB-C ports.
• Captain Chairs: The 6-seat configuration replaces the middle bench with two luxury captain chairs. This allows for a walk-through aisle to the rear, making it easier for kids.

• Consumption: 9–11 km/l (GLS 400d). For a 2.5-tonne building, this is impressive.
• Service: Parts prices are eye-watering. A single air strut can cost Ksh 200,000. Brake pads and discs are massive and priced accordingly. Only use specialized workshops.
• Tyres: Massive 21, 22, or even 23-inch wheels. A set of tyres can cost Ksh 300,000. Be prepared.

E-Active Body Control: (Optional) This system scans the road and adjusts the suspension instantly. It can "lean" into corners like a motorcycle. Standard Airmatic suspension provides a cloud-like ride over rough roads. It is extremely capable, provided you don't shred the low-profile tyres.

It is a fortress. Features virtually every safety system Mercedes has invented. Reliability of the 400d engine is good, but the sheer complexity of the electronics means you will likely see a dashboard warning light eventually.
