2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA (H247) finally grows up. While the 1st Generation (X156) launched in 2013 was essentially a lifted A-Class hatchback with cramped rear seats, this 2nd Generation (launched in 2020) is a proper compact SUV. It is 10cm taller, wider, and offers significantly more headroom and legroom. It transforms the GLA from a "fashion accessory" into a genuinely practical family car.
Quick Specs
Engine Options & Model Codes
The H247 drops the old 1.6L for the new efficient 1.3L:
- GLA 200 (1.3L Turbo): 161 HP. RECOMMENDED The M282 engine punches above its weight. It is perfect for city driving and light highway use, offering excellent fuel economy.
- GLA 250 4MATIC (2.0L Turbo): 221 HP. For those who want real speed and AWD grip. It uses the M260 engine and an 8-speed DCT.
- GLA 200d (2.0L Diesel): 148 HP. The long-distance champion. Uses the OM654q engine. Very clean and torque-rich (320 Nm).
Interior & Practicality
- Rear Space: Rear legroom has increased by 11cm compared to the old model! Adults can finally sit comfortably in the back.
- MBUX: The widescreen cockpit (twin 10.25-inch screens on high spec) is standard-setting. The graphics are crisp, and the "Hey Mercedes" voice control is helpful for changing settings without taking eyes off the road.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- Consumption: 14–16 km/l (GLA 200). The 7-speed DCT is smooth and efficient.
- Service: It is a premium entry-level car. Parts like brake pads and sensors are shared with the A-Class and GLB, ensuring good availability but premium pricing.
- Tyres: 18-inch wheels are standard. Avoid the optional 20-inch AMG wheels if you drive on rough roads; the low profile tyres will bulge.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
Ground Clearance: At 183mm (standard suspension), it is much better than the old model (134mm). It can now handle Kenyan speed bumps and light marram roads with confidence. It is a genuine crossover, not just a high hatchback.
Safety & Reliability
Standard Active Brake Assist and Attention Assist. The H247 is built on a stiffer platform than the X156. The 1.3L engine is reliable, but ensure the turbo is allowed to cool down after hard driving.

The Ci Verdict
Who is this for? The urban driver who wants the prestige of the Star in a package that is easy to park and now genuinely practical for small families. Who is it NOT for? Those who need a massive boot—the boot is decent (435L) but not class-leading.
