The 2020 Daihatsu Rocky is a massive comeback story. The original Rocky (1989–2002) was a rugged off-roader, but this new A200 generation (introduced in November 2019) is a sophisticated compact SUV built for the city. It is the identical twin of the Toyota Raize. For Kenyan buyers, the Rocky often sells for Ksh 100k–200k less than the Raize simply because of the badge, making it the smarter financial choice for the exact same car.

The 2020 Rocky focuses on efficiency with a punch:

• 1.0L Turbo (1KR-VET): RECOMMENDED This 3-cylinder turbo engine produces 98 HP and 140 Nm of torque—equivalent to a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine but with better fuel economy. It pairs with a D-CVT (Dual mode CVT) which uses a physical gear for highway cruising to reduce the "rubber band" feel.

• Digital Cockpit: Even mid-spec models feature a fully digital instrument cluster with four selectable display themes. It feels very modern for the price point.
• Boot Space: It offers class-leading 369 litres of space. The boot floor has a "hidden" lower deck that is surprisingly deep—perfect for hiding laptops or tall plants.

• Consumption: 16–18 km/l in mixed driving. The 1.0L engine sips fuel if you stay out of the turbo boost zone.
• Service: It shares oil filters and spark plugs with the Toyota Vitz and Passo (1KR engines), so consumables are cheap and available everywhere.
• Tyres: Uses massive 17-inch wheels on the "Premium" grade (195/60R17). These tyres can be pricey (approx. Ksh 12k each). The lower "L" grade uses cheaper 16-inch tyres.

Ground Clearance: At 185mm, it clears almost all speed bumps in Nairobi estates. The short overhangs (distance from wheel to bumper) mean it handles steep driveways better than a sedan. It is an excellent "pothole dodging" urban SUV.
