Although production ended in 2013, the Toyota Vanguard remains a legend in the Kenyan used car market. It offers what the RAV4 didn't: 7 seats in a compact SUV body. It is the perfect budget-friendly family hauler for those who can't afford a new X-Trail or Outlander.

The 2.4L (2AZ-FE) is the most common. It has a known issue with oil consumption in high-mileage units, so check the oil level dipstick carefully. The 3.5L V6 (2GR-FE) is a rocket ship but extremely thirsty. Stick to the 2.4L for daily use.

Expect around 8-10 km/l for the 2.4L in mixed driving. It is not as efficient as the modern 2019+ Harriers or RAV4s, but parts are cheap, which balances the cost.

The third row folds flat into the floor, a brilliant design feature. It is tight for adults but perfect for kids. Ground clearance is decent (190mm), and AWD models handle muddy roads well.

The interior features Alcantara/suede seats in higher trims, which age well in the Kenyan sun. It lacks modern tech like Apple CarPlay, but aftermarket Android screens are easily fitted.

It comes with DAC (Downhill Assist Control) and multiple airbags. It feels planted on the highway, though the suspension is slightly firmer than a Harrier.

Parts are everywhere. Because it shares a platform with the RAV4, maintaining a Vanguard is incredibly cheap and easy in any town in Kenya.

The 2AZ-FE engine is known for burning oil. When buying used, check the exhaust for blue smoke and check the service history for regular oil top-ups.

Since these can no longer be imported (over 8 years old), you must buy locally used units.

The Toyota Vanguard is still a great buy if you find a clean one. Just get a mechanical inspection to ensure the engine isn't burning oil. It is the affordable 7-seater SUV king.
