2019 Toyota Pixis Mega: A Carimports.co.ke Review

The Big Picture

The 2019 Toyota Pixis Mega is the skyscraper of the Kei car world. Origin: Japan. First Generation: Launched in 2015 as a rebadged Daihatsu Wake. Current Generation: Discontinued in 2022. It boasts an incredible interior height of 1,455mm, which is higher than a Toyota Alphard's interior! It is designed for maximum utility in a minimum footprint, featuring sliding doors and a waterproof boot for outdoor gear.

Quick Specs

Height 1,835 mm
Tank Size 34 Litres
Power 52 - 64 HP
Doors Twin Sliding

Engine Options & Model Codes

Standard Daihatsu KF powertrains:

  • 660cc Turbo (KF-VET): 64 HP / 92 Nm. RECOMMENDED Because the Mega is tall and heavy (approx 1,000kg), the turbo is essential for highway merging and hill climbing.
  • 660cc NA (KF-VE): 52 HP. Best suited for flat city driving only.

Interior & Practicality

  • Vertical Space: The headroom is comical. A child can stand upright. The rear seats slide and recline. The passenger seat also folds flat to create a table.
  • Miracle Luggage: The boot has a 90-Litre underfloor storage box (on 2WD models) which is tall enough to stand wine bottles upright. The interior is full of hooks and hidden compartments.

Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs

  • Consumption: 15–18 km/l (Turbo). The boxy shape creates drag, so highway economy is lower than a Mira e:S.
  • Service: It is a Daihatsu. Parts are cheap and shared with the Move and Tanto. The body is unique, so panel repairs can be tricky.

Suitability for Kenyan Roads

Crosswind Warning: Due to its height (1.8m) and narrow track, it is susceptible to strong crosswinds on highways like Mombasa Road. Stability Control (VSC) is standard to help manage this. 140mm clearance is standard for a city car.

Safety & Reliability

Standard Smart Assist II (collision avoidance). Reliability is excellent, but the electric sliding doors require regular lubrication to prevent jamming in dusty conditions.

The Ci Verdict

Who is this for? The parent who needs a car that can hold a bicycle upright or a business owner who delivers tall items (cakes, flowers) in the city. Who is it NOT for? Highway speed demons—the aerodynamics of a brick wall make it noisy and slow at 100km/h.
