The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 250 (Prado J250) is the biggest shift in the Prado lineage in 15 years. Gone are the soft curves of the J150; in comes a boxy, retro-futuristic design inspired by the classic 70 Series. It signals a return to pure utility, targeting purists and luxury buyers alike.

The headline is the 2.8L Diesel (1GD-FTV) now paired with a 48V Mild-Hybrid system (in select markets) and a new 8-speed automatic. This fixes the sluggishness of the old 6-speed. It produces 201 HP and 500 Nm of torque, delivering smoother acceleration and better economy (approx 11-13 km/l).

The squared-off hood improves visibility on trails. The split tailgate is gone, replaced by a powered liftgate with a pop-up glass hatch. It retains the 7-seat layout, but the third row now folds flat into the floor, vastly improving cargo utility.

Inside, it feels like a fortress. Chunky physical buttons (a plus for off-roading) mix with massive dual 12.3-inch screens. The "First Edition" trims feature unique round headlights and two-tone leather.

It rides on the TNGA-F frame (same as the LC300). This increases rigidity by 50%, virtually eliminating the body wobble of the old Prado. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard.

Being a Land Cruiser, reliability is the core philosophy. The 1GD engine is a known quantity in Kenya. The new 8-speed gearbox is sealed for life but we recommend fluid changes at 100,000km.

Engine service parts (filters) are identical to the Hilux/Prado J150. Body parts are currently dealer-only items and expensive due to the new model status.

The SDM (Stabilizer with Disconnection Mechanism) allows you to disconnect the front sway bar with a button for massive wheel articulation—a first for Toyota.

As a brand-new model, prices are high. Importing a near-new unit from Japan/UK can offer savings over the showroom floor price.
