The 2019 Toyota Coaster (B70 Series) is the "New Shape" that redefined the PSV industry. Replacing the curvy body that had been around since 1993, the 2019 model features a boxier, safer, and more spacious design. Known in the Matatu world as "Chopper" or "Nganya," it is the preferred choice for premium shuttles, staff buses, and tourist transfers due to its unbreakable reliability.

The B70 series relies on one primary workhorse engine:

• N04C-VJ (4.0L Turbo Diesel): RECOMMENDED This is a modern common-rail engine producing around 150HP. It is far more efficient than the old 1HZ non-turbo engine. However, it requires clean diesel and strict maintenance of the EGR system.

• The "Big Cabin": The new shape body is 60mm wider and has a higher roof than the old model. This makes walking down the aisle much easier for passengers.
• Safety Cage: The new body uses a ring-frame structure which is significantly stronger in a rollover accident, a crucial upgrade for Kenyan PSV safety.

• Consumption: 7–8 km/l. Efficient for a 29-seater bus.
• Service: Parts are available but expensive. A genuine fuel injector for the N04C engine can cost Ksh 40,000. Do not use cheap filters—they will destroy the injectors.
• Resale: High. Matatu Saccos are always buying. A well-maintained "New Shape" Coaster commands a premium.

Suspension: The new model features improved stabilizers, reducing the "boat-like" swaying of the old model. It handles corners on the Nakuru-Nairobi highway with much more stability. Ground clearance is adequate for most routes but low front overhangs require care on speed bumps.

The 2019 Coaster comes with VSC (Vehicle Stability Control), ABS, and Dual Airbags for the driver and front passenger. This tech is a massive leap forward for PSV safety in Kenya. Reliability is 10/10, provided you service the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) system correctly.
