2019 Subaru WRX: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2019 Subaru WRX (VA Chassis) is the modern evolution of a rally legend. While the nameplate started in 1992 based on the Impreza, the VA generation (introduced in 2014) split off to become a standalone model. For the Kenyan enthusiast, the 2019 model is significant because it includes the "Series.Gray" updates and an improved infotainment system (Apple CarPlay/Android Auto) which was missing in older units.
Quick Specs
Engine Options & Model Codes
You must distinguish between the "Daily Driver" and the "Track Toy":
- WRX (FA20F): 2.0L Direct Injection Turbo. RECOMMENDED This modern engine uses a twin-scroll turbo for instant torque. It is available with a 6-speed manual or a Sport Lineartronic CVT.
- WRX STI (EJ257): 2.5L Turbo. The old-school rumble. It produces 310 HP but suffers from significant turbo lag and heavy fuel consumption. It is manual ONLY.
Interior & Practicality
- Starlink Infotainment: The 2019 update finally added a responsive 6.5-inch or 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay. No more struggling with aftermarket radios.
- Cabin Noise: It is loud. Road noise and exhaust drone are part of the package. Do not expect the silence of a Mark X.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- Consumption: 8–10 km/l (WRX) vs 6–7 km/l (STI). It demands V-Power (Shell) or similar high-octane fuel.
- Service: The Boxer engine is sensitive. Oil changes every 5,000km are non-negotiable. Spark plug replacement is difficult and expensive due to the engine layout.
- Tyres: It eats tyres. Expect to replace the 245/40R18 performance tyres every 25,000km if driven hard.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
Suspension: The ride is stiff. You will feel every pothole on Mombasa Road. Ground clearance is 135mm, which is low. We strongly advise installing a localized sump guard to protect the fragile oil pan.
Safety & Reliability
EyeSight: CVT models come with Subaru's excellent EyeSight driver assist (Adaptive Cruise, Pre-Collision Braking). Reliability is good if left stock. Once you start modifying (tuning, big turbo), reliability drops off a cliff.

The Ci Verdict
Who is this for? The enthusiast who needs a 4-door family car but lives for the weekend drive on Limuru Road. Who is it NOT for? Someone looking for a comfortable commuter—the suspension is too harsh for daily traffic jams.
