The 2019 Subaru BRZ is the antidote to the boring, computerized crossovers flooding Nairobi roads. Developed jointly with Toyota (who sell it as the 86), it prioritizes fun over speed. While the 2nd Generation (ZD8) launched in 2021 with a bigger 2.4L engine, the 2019 model (late 1st Gen) remains the smart buy in Kenya. It features the mature suspension tuning, updated aerodynamics, and improved infotainment that the early 2012 models lacked, all for a fraction of the price of the new shape.

The heart of the BRZ is the Boxer engine:

• FA20 (2.0L NA): 205 HP (Manual) / 200 HP (Auto). STANDARD This naturally aspirated engine loves to rev. It has a distinctive "torque dip" around 3,000-4,000 RPM, but pulls hard to the redline. It is reliable if left stock, but sensitive to poor fuel quality.

• 2+2 Seating: Let's be honest: this is a 2-seater. The rear seats are bucket-shaped shelves for your backpack or a very small child. Legroom is non-existent if the driver is tall.
• Driver Focus: The tachometer is dead center. The 2019 model features a refreshed infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay, fixing the biggest complaint of earlier models.

• Consumption: 10–12 km/l. It forces you to drive enthusiastically, which hurts economy.
• Service: The Boxer engine has spark plugs on the sides, making them difficult to change (engine lifting is often required). Use 0W-20 synthetic oil only.
• Tyres: It uses standard 215/45R17 tyres (shared with the Prius!). This makes tyre replacement surprisingly cheap, encouraging "spirited" driving.

Clearance Warning: At 130mm, it is a ground scraper. You cannot straddle bumps; you must put one wheel on the bump. It is strictly a weekend toy for tarmac roads like the Southern Bypass. Taking it to "shags" is a recipe for a cracked bumper.

The chassis is extremely rigid, offering excellent crash protection. Reliability is generally good, but watch out for the "Valve Spring Recall" on very early models (2012-2013). The 2019 model is free of these teething issues.
