2019 Peugeot 5008: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2019 Peugeot 5008 (2nd Generation) is the master of disguise. While the 1st Generation (2009-2016) was a boring MPV, this new model (launched in 2017) reinvented itself as a stylish 7-seater SUV. It shares its EMP2 platform and front half with the smaller 3008 but adds a stretched wheelbase and a boxy rear end for maximum practicality. It is the best-looking way to carry 7 people without driving a bus.
Quick Specs
Engine Options & Model Codes
For Kenya, the petrol and diesel options are distinct:
- 1.6L THP Petrol (Turbo): 163 HP. STANDARD This engine, co-developed with BMW (Prince engine), is punchy and smooth. Paired with a 6-speed Aisin automatic. Note: Ensure timing chain tensioner updates have been done.
- 2.0L BlueHDi Diesel: 178 HP. The torque monster (400 Nm). Ideal for long-distance cruising and carrying full loads. It uses AdBlue to meet emissions standards.
Interior & Practicality
- i-Cockpit: The steering wheel is tiny and you look over it at the digital dials, not through it. It feels futuristic and sporty. The piano-key toggle switches are a tactile delight.
- Modular Seating: The three middle-row seats are individual (not a bench) and slide independently. The two 3rd-row seats can be folded flat OR completely removed (they weigh 11kg each) to create a cavernous boot.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- Consumption: 12–14 km/l (Petrol) vs 16–18 km/l (Diesel). The aerodynamic shape helps highway economy.
- Service: Urysia (Peugeot Kenya) supports the brand well. Parts are pricier than Toyota but availability is good. Independent specialists are increasing in Nairobi.
- Resale: It depreciates faster than a Prado or Fortuner. This makes it an excellent second-hand buy but a questionable short-term investment.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
FWD Only: Despite the rugged looks and 230mm clearance, there is no 4WD option. It uses "Advanced Grip Control" (electronic traction modes for mud/sand), which is surprisingly effective for light off-road, but don't take it deep into the Aberdares mud.
Safety & Reliability
5-Star Euro NCAP. Features Active Safety Brake and Driver Attention Alert. The 2nd Gen 5008 has proven much more reliable electrically than the older Peugeots of the 2000s.
