The 2019 Nissan Caravan (NV350) is the arch-rival to the Toyota HiAce. Origin: Japan (Shonan). For years, the HiAce "Box" dominated the PSV (Matatu) and school van market in Kenya, but the Caravan has gained massive ground. Why? It offers similar durability, slightly more driver comfort, and crucially, a lower entry price. It is a tool for making money, plain and simple.

Choosing the right engine determines your profit margin:

• 2.5L Diesel Turbo (YD25DDTi) RECOMMENDED
  129 PS / 356 Nm. This is the same block found in the older Navara. It provides excellent torque for hauling heavy loads up the Rift Valley escarpment.
• 2.0L Petrol (QR20DE)
  130 PS. Smoother but lacks the torque for heavy commercial work. Only buy this if you are converting it into a light-duty passenger van or camper.

• Load Space: The Caravan is famous for its 3-meter long cargo area (in Long Body trim). It fits standard 8x4 plywood sheets flat on the floor.
• Seating: Available in 3-seater (cargo), 6-seater, or 14-seater (Bus) configurations. The seats fold up easily to maximize space.

The YD25 engine is reliable IF serviced correctly. It is sensitive to overheating, so ensure the radiator and coolant system are flushed regularly. Timing chains should be inspected at 100,000km. Parts are widely available in Industrial Area.

• Diesel Economy: 10–12 km/l (Unloaded), 8–9 km/l (Loaded).
• Resale Value: Good, but not as high as the Toyota HiAce. This makes it a better buy for the second owner (you).

• Suspension: Leaf springs at the rear mean it is bouncy when empty but settles down when carrying a ton of potatoes. It handles rough feeder roads well due to its robust chassis.

Standard ABS and a driver airbag. Higher trims (Premium GX) get Intelligent Emergency Braking. It is a workhorse, designed to do 500,000km with basic maintenance.
