2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS: A Carimports.co.ke Review

The Big Picture

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS (C257) is the third iteration of the car that invented the "four-door coupe" genre back in 2004. While rivals like the Audi A7 have since joined the party, the CLS remains the style icon. This 3rd Generation (launched in 2018) introduces the aggressive "Shark Nose" front end and, for the first time in CLS history, offers five seats instead of four, making it a viable family car for the stylish executive.

Engine Options & Model Codes

The CLS shares its engines with the E-Class but tunes them for sportier response:

  • CLS 350 (2.0L Turbo + EQ Boost): 299 HP. SMART CHOICE A high-output 4-cylinder with mild-hybrid assist. It offers 6-cylinder performance with 4-cylinder fuel bills.
  • CLS 450 4MATIC (3.0L Inline-6 + EQ Boost): 367 HP. The return of the silky-smooth straight-six. It delivers effortless, turbine-like power and is the engine this car deserves.
  • CLS 400d (2.9L Inline-6 Diesel): 340 HP. The torque king (700 Nm). Incredible highway cruiser, but sensitive to fuel quality.

Interior & Practicality

  • Jet Turbine Vents: The illuminated air vents change color (red/blue) when you adjust the temperature. It is theater, pure and simple.
  • The 5th Seat: While technically a 5-seater, the middle rear seat is narrow and straddles a high transmission tunnel. It is best used for children or short trips. Headroom is tight for anyone over 6ft due to the sloping roof.

Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs

  • Consumption: 10–12 km/l (CLS 350) vs 12–14 km/l (CLS 400d). The aerodynamic shape helps highway economy.
  • Service: This is a complex car. The EQ Boost 48V system requires specialized diagnostic tools. Routine service is similar to an E-Class, but body panels (frameless doors, bumpers) are unique and expensive.
  • Tyres: 19-inch or 20-inch mixed-width tyres are standard. Expect to pay a premium for replacements.

Suitability for Kenyan Roads

Ground Clearance Alert: At 118mm, it is extremely low. The long wheelbase exacerbates the issue, making it prone to beaching on sharp speed bumps. Air Body Control (air suspension) is highly recommended as it allows you to raise the car slightly, but steel springs are safer for long-term durability.

Safety & Reliability

Includes PRE-SAFE Sound (plays a noise to protect ears during a crash) and Active Brake Assist. Reliability of the inline-6 engines has been good so far, but the complex electronics suite can be glitchy.

The Ci Verdict

Who is this for? The CEO who finds the E-Class too common and the S-Class too "chauffeur-driven." Who is it NOT for? Anyone who prioritizes rear headroom or needs to drive over unmarked speed bumps.
