2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The Mercedes-Benz CLA created the "compact four-door coupe" segment when it first launched in 2013. The 2019 model year is pivotal because it marks the launch of the Second Generation (C118). This new shape fixes the biggest complaints of the old model (cramped interior, cheap plastics) and adds the stunning MBUX widescreen cockpit. It is a mini-CLS that turns heads everywhere.
Quick Specs
Engine Options & Model Codes
The new generation uses efficient 1.3L turbo engines shared with the A-Class.
-
1.3L Turbo Petrol (Model: CLA 180 / CLA 200) RECOMMENDED
Features the M282 engine. The CLA 180 puts out 134 HP, while the CLA 200 boosts this to 161 HP. Both are sufficient for daily use and offer excellent fuel economy. -
2.0L Turbo Diesel (Model: CLA 200d / 220d)
Features the OM654 engine. Smooth, quiet, and powerful (190 HP in 220d). A great highway cruiser but rarer to find in Japan imports.
Interior & Practicality
- Widescreen Cockpit: The twin 10.25-inch screens (on high spec) look spectacular. The turbine vents and ambient lighting (64 colors) make it feel like a nightclub at night.
- Coupe Roofline: While stunning, the sloping roof cuts into rear headroom. Passengers over 5'10" will brush the ceiling. The boot is decent at 460 litres but has a narrow opening.
Infotainment & Technology
- MBUX: The Mercedes-Benz User Experience system is standard. "Hey Mercedes" voice control actually works. Touchpad on the center console replaces the old rotary dial.
- Frameless Doors: A signature feature of the CLA. They look amazing when opened but require careful handling of the window seals to prevent wind noise as the car ages.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- CLA 180 Economy: 14–16 km/l
- Maintenance: High. It is a fashion-forward Mercedes. Parts are specific to the coupe body style and cost more than the equivalent A-Class sedan parts.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
- Ground Clearance: Very Low (104mm). The AMG Line body kit makes it even lower. You will scrape on speed bumps. It is strictly a tarmac car for Kileleshwa, Lavington, and Westlands.
- Ride: The suspension is sporty and firm. You will feel every pothole. Avoid the 19-inch wheels if you value your spine.
Safety & Reliability
The C118 is mechanically similar to the A-Class W177. The 1.3L engine is generally robust. Electronics are the main watch-out; ensure the screen software is up to date.

The Ci Verdict
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA (C118) is an emotional purchase. It costs significantly more than the A-Class sedan for the same mechanicals, just for the sloping roof and frameless doors. Is it worth it? Absolutely. It looks like a baby AMG GT 4-Door and offers a sense of occasion that no BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe can match.
