2019 Mazda Axela (Mazda3): A Carimports.co.ke Review

The Big Picture

The 2019 Mazda Axela (known globally as the Mazda3) represents the "Final Edition" of the 3rd Generation (BM/BY Series) before the launch of the newer Mazda3 (BP) later that year. Production of this generation started in 2013. It is the "Premium Choice" in the compact segment, prioritizing driving dynamics and interior quality over sheer cabin space. It sits perfectly between the budget Toyota Corolla Axio and the expensive VW Golf.

Powertrain & Performance

Mazda's "SkyActiv" technology focuses on high compression ratios rather than turbos:

  • 1.5L Petrol (SkyActiv-G): The volume seller. Produces 110 hp. It is linear, responsive, and pairs beautifully with the 6-speed automatic (no rubber-band CVT feel here). Returns 14–16 km/l.
  • 2.2L Diesel (SkyActiv-D): A torque monster (380 Nm). It transforms the Axela into a sports car, but requires diligent maintenance (DPF cleaning) and low-sulfur diesel. Not recommended for purely city driving.

Design & Practicality

Available as a Sedan or "Sport" Hatchback. The "KODO: Soul of Motion" design still looks fresh today. The interior features a rotary dial for the infotainment screen, mimicking BMW's iDrive. Ground clearance is 155mm, which is decent. The main drawback is the rear seat space, which feels tighter and darker (due to the rising beltline) than a Subaru Impreza.

Reliability & Maintenance

The 1.5L Petrol engine is incredibly robust. The 6-speed automatic transmission is a torque-converter unit, meaning it is more durable than the CVTs found in the Impreza or Axio. Suspension components (bushes/mounts) are the only common wear items on Kenyan roads. Parts are widely available as this model shares components with the Demio and CX-5.

💰 2019 Mazda Axela Price in Kenya (Import vs Local)

The Axela offers a "Business Class" feel for an "Economy Class" price.

2019 Trim Level Est. Import Cost Avg. Dealer Price Est. Difference
1.5S Proactive Ksh 1.6M - 1.8M Ksh 2.2M - 2.4M ~Ksh 600k
2.2 XD (Diesel) Ksh 1.8M - 2.0M Ksh 2.5M - 2.7M ~Ksh 700k

* Prices listed above are average asking prices for a 2019 model in showrooms across Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret, and Kisumu.

The Ci Verdict

The 2019 Mazda Axela is the driver's choice in the budget segment. It feels more expensive than a Toyota Fielder or Nissan Sylphy. If you value handling and interior design over maximum rear seat space, this is the best value-for-money car under 2M.

Meet the Rivals

Subaru Impreza (GK)

Standard AWD offers better safety in rain, but the engine feels lethargic compared to the Mazda's SkyActiv unit.

Volkswagen Golf (Mk7)

The refinement benchmark. Quieter and faster (Turbo), but maintenance costs are significantly higher.
