2019 Mazda Atenza (Mazda6): A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2019 Mazda Atenza (known globally as the Mazda6) is the 3rd Generation (GJ Series) facelift. While the GJ chassis originally launched in 2012, the 2018/2019 update was extensive, introducing a stunning new grille, redesigned dashboard, and improved sound insulation. It is the only Japanese sedan that genuinely competes with the BMW 3 Series on driving dynamics.
Powertrain & Performance
Mazda eschews small turbos for large displacement efficiency ("SkyActiv"):
- 2.0L Petrol (SkyActiv-G): Smooth and linear (154 hp). It is reliable and efficient (13–15 km/l) but lacks the low-end punch of a turbo.
- 2.2L Diesel (SkyActiv-D): The star of the show. With 450 Nm of torque, it pulls harder than a C-Class while returning 16–18 km/l. The 2019 update addressed earlier carbon buildup issues, but it still requires highway driving to regenerate the DPF.
- 2.5L Turbo Petrol: Rare in Kenya, but offers 250 hp. A sleeper performance car.
Design & Practicality
The 2019 interior uses Japanese Sen Wood and Nappa Leather in the "L Package," feeling far more expensive than its price tag. Ground clearance is 160mm, which is excellent for a sedan. The Wagon version (Atenza Wagon) is also popular, offering SUV-like cargo space (522 liters) with sedan handling.
Reliability & Maintenance
SkyActiv engines are high-compression and require high-quality fuel. For Diesel units, strictly use low-sulfur diesel and check the oil level regularly (rising oil levels indicate failed DPF regeneration). The 6-speed automatic is a torque-converter unit, far more durable than the CVTs found in competitors.

The Ci Verdict
The 2019 Mazda Atenza is the driver's choice. It offers the styling and interior quality of a Jaguar at a Toyota price. If you can commit to the maintenance requirements of the diesel engine, it is an unbeatable highway cruiser.

Offers more rear legroom and a "business-like" image, but the driving experience is more detached than the Mazda.
