2019 Lexus LS 500: A Carimports.co.ke Review

The Big Picture

The 2019 Lexus LS (5th Generation) marks a radical departure from its conservative roots. Gone is the boxy, understated look of the LS 460. The new LS is lower, longer, and features a coupe-like silhouette. It aims to compete not just on reliability, but on pure artistry and emotion. For the Kenyan executive, it offers a "Japan-Modern" luxury experience—Kiriko glass, pleated fabrics—that feels distinct from the clinical German rivals.

Engine Options & Model Codes

The V8 is dead. Long live the Twin-Turbo V6:

  • LS 500 (3.5L Twin-Turbo V6): 416 HP. STANDARD Paired with a 10-speed automatic. It is faster than the old V8 (0-100 kph in 4.6s) but lacks the smooth, silent idle of the V8.
  • LS 500h (3.5L V6 Hybrid): 354 HP. Uses Lexus's Multi-Stage Hybrid system (CVT + 4-speed auto). It provides a more "limousine-like" smooth takeoff and excellent city fuel economy.

Interior & Practicality

  • Omotenashi: The hospitality concept is real. The seats have a "Shiatsu" massage function (on Executive package) that actually works. The rear seat reclines 48 degrees with an ottoman leg rest.
  • Infotainment Pains: The 2019 model still uses the controversial "Remote Touch" trackpad. It is frustrating to use while driving on bumpy Kenyan roads.

Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs

  • Consumption: 8–9 km/l (LS 500) vs 12–14 km/l (LS 500h). The hybrid is the only sensible choice for daily use.
  • Service: Lexus reliability is legendary, but parts are exclusive. The 10-speed transmission fluid is specialized. Run-flat tyres are standard and expensive (Ksh 40k+ each).
  • Air Suspension: The air struts give a cloud-like ride but will eventually leak (usually after 8-10 years). Budget approx. Ksh 150,000 per strut for replacement when the time comes.

Suitability for Kenyan Roads

Lift Mode: Models with air suspension have a "High" mode that raises the car by 30mm. This is useful for getting over speed bumps or rough driveways. However, the long wheelbase (3125mm) means it can still bottom out (beach) on sharp humps.

Safety & Reliability

Includes Lexus Safety System+ A, which can detect pedestrians and actively steer around them in an emergency. It is arguably the safest Japanese sedan ever built.

The Ci Verdict

Who is this for? The high-net-worth individual who values craftsmanship and reliability over the "flashiness" of a Mercedes S-Class. Who is it NOT for? Anyone who expects the simple, cheap maintenance of a Toyota Camry—this is a complex, high-tech machine.

Meet the Rivals

The global benchmark. More prestige, higher running costs.
