2019 Lexus ES 300h: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2019 Lexus ES (XZ10) is the car that made the GS irrelevant. Launched in 1989 alongside the original LS 400, the ES has always been the "sensible luxury" choice. This 7th Generation, however, is a game changer. Built on the GA-K platform (shared with the Camry and Avalon), it is lower, wider, and sleeker than ever before. It finally looks like a "Baby LS" rather than a fancy Camry.
Quick Specs
Engine Options & Model Codes
The ES 300h is the volume seller in Kenya:
- ES 300h (2.5L Hybrid): RECOMMENDED Uses the A25A-FXS engine. It is incredibly thermal efficient (41%). It delivers 215 HP and effortless torque, making it faster than the old ES 250 but twice as efficient.
Interior & Practicality
- Rear Legroom: The wheelbase grew by 2 inches, creating massive rear legroom. It is comparable to a Mercedes S-Class SWB. It is the perfect car for being chauffeured in.
- Silence: Lexus uses Active Noise Control and acoustic glass to make the cabin tomb-like. It is significantly quieter than a C-Class or 3 Series.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- Consumption: 18–20 km/l. For a large luxury sedan, this is revolutionary.
- Service: It shares mechanicals with the Camry Hybrid, so filters and brake pads are affordable. However, body parts (triple-beam LED headlights, spindle grille) are exorbitantly expensive.
- Hybrid Battery: The battery is now under the rear seat (not in the boot), freeing up cargo space. Reliability is excellent, with few failures reported under 10 years.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
Clearance Warning: At 140mm, the front overhang is long and low. It scrapes easily on steep ramps. The "F-Sport" bumpers are even lower. It is a highway cruiser, not a pot-hole dodger.
Safety & Reliability
Features Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, including Cyclist Detection. It is one of the safest cars in its class. Reliability is rated 5/5 by almost every consumer index globally.

The Ci Verdict
Who is this for? The executive who wants Mercedes-Benz comfort but hates the idea of a "Check Engine" light. Who is it NOT for? Driving enthusiasts—it is front-wheel drive and built for comfort, not cornering.
