2019 Honda Grace: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2019 Honda Grace is essentially a Honda Fit Sedan. Known as the "City" in other markets, the JDM "Grace" spec is significantly more premium, featuring better sound insulation and higher-grade materials. In Kenya, it targets the Toyota Axio buyer who wants a bit more style and driving engagement. It is one of the few cars in this class to offer rear A/C vents, a huge plus for passengers.
Powertrain & Performance
Like the Fit, the Grace splits its personality between Petrol and Hybrid:
- 1.5L Petrol (LX): Uses a CVT gearbox. It produces 130 hp and is the low-risk, low-maintenance option. Ideal for upcountry use where mechanics fear hybrids. Returns 15–17 km/l.
- 1.5L Hybrid (DX/EX): Uses the 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). It is quick and efficient (20–24 km/l), but the DCT is sensitive. It must not be held on hills using the accelerator; use the brake or handbrake to prevent clutch overheating.
Design & Practicality
The Grace looks sharp, with a "Solid Wing Face" grille. The boot is massive for a compact sedan (536 liters), easily swallowing two large suitcases. Ground clearance is 135mm (Hybrid) or 150mm (4WD versions). We recommend installing 185/65R15 tires to gain height without ruining the speedometer accuracy.
Reliability & Maintenance
The Hybrid's DCT gearbox is the primary failure point if neglected. You must use Honda Ultra ATF-DW1 (for Petrol CVT) or Honda ATF-Z1 (for older models), but for the DCT Hybrid, verify the exact fluid code on the dipstick (usually Honda DOT 4 Brake Fluid for the actuator and specific gear oil for the box). Misdiagnosis is common in local garages.
💰 2019 Honda Grace Price in Kenya (Import vs Local)
The Grace is often cheaper to import than an Axio WxB, offering better value for money.
| 2019 Trim Level | Est. Import Cost | Avg. Dealer Price | Est. Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hybrid LX | Ksh 1.5M - 1.7M | Ksh 2.0M - 2.2M | ~Ksh 500k |
| Hybrid EX (Leather) | Ksh 1.7M - 1.9M | Ksh 2.4M - 2.5M | ~Ksh 600k |
* Prices listed above are average asking prices for a 2019 model in showrooms across Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret, and Kisumu.
The Ci Verdict
The 2019 Honda Grace is the sportier, more comfortable alternative to the Toyota Axio. If you drive yourself and value a premium cabin and acceleration, pick the Grace. If you are buying a car for a hired driver or taxi work, stick to the Axio for simplicity.
Meet the Rivals
Toyota Axio (E160)
The safe bet. Parts are everywhere and resale is instant, but the interior feels dated and "fleet-like."

Better handling and arguably better looking, but rear seat space is significantly tighter than the Grace.
