2019 BMW M5: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2019 BMW M5 (F90) is the supercar disguised as a CEO's office. Origin: Germany (Dingolfing). First Generation: 1984 (E28). Current Generation: G90 (Launched 2024). The F90 generation solved the biggest problem of the previous M5s: traction. It introduced **M xDrive**, an intelligent all-wheel-drive system that puts the 600 horsepower to the tarmac without drama, yet allows you to switch to 2WD mode ("Drift Mode") if you want to destroy tires.
Quick Specs
Engine Options & Model Codes
One engine, two states of tune:
- 4.4L Twin-Turbo V8 (S63): 600 HP / 750 Nm. STANDARD This engine is a powerhouse. Paired with the ZF 8-speed automatic (replacing the jerky DCT of the old model), it is smooth in traffic and violent on the highway.
- M5 Competition: 625 HP. Stiffer engine mounts, lower suspension, and a sports exhaust. It hits 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds.
Interior & Practicality
- The M Buttons: Two bright red buttons (M1 and M2) on the steering wheel allow you to save your favorite setups (e.g., M1 for Comfort, M2 for Sport Plus/2WD).
- Business Class: Despite the performance, it is still a 5 Series. It seats 5 adults comfortably and has a 530-litre boot. It is the ultimate "Q-Car" (sleeper).
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- Consumption: 5–7 km/l. It is a 600HP V8; fuel economy is irrelevant.
- Service: The S63 engine generates immense heat. Oil changes must be frequent (every 5,000km recommended for Kenya). Brake pads and discs (especially if Carbon Ceramic) cost a fortune.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
Firm but Fair: The suspension is adjustable. In "Comfort," it is surprisingly compliant on Nairobi roads. However, the 20-inch wheels with 35-profile tyres are susceptible to pothole damage. Ground clearance (132mm) means you must be careful on speed bumps.
Safety & Reliability
5-Star Euro NCAP. The F90 M5 is proving to be more reliable than the F10 generation. The torque converter gearbox is bulletproof compared to the old DCT clutches. Cooling system maintenance is key.
