2019 Audi S7 Sportback: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2019 Audi S7 Sportback is a grand tourer with a dark secret. Origin: Germany. First Generation: Launched in 2012 (C7). Current Generation: 2nd Generation (C8, launched 2019). The C8 generation made a controversial but brilliant move in Europe: it switched from a V8 petrol engine to a 3.0L V6 TDI (Diesel) with an electric compressor. It combines massive torque with the fuel range to drive from Nairobi to Mombasa and back on a single tank.
Quick Specs
Engine Options & Model Codes
Note the difference between European and Global models:
- 3.0L V6 TDI (European Spec): 344 HP / 700 Nm. MOST COMMON Most UK imports will be this diesel. It uses an Electric Powered Compressor (EPC) to eliminate turbo lag. It is a torque monster that pulls like a freight train.
- 2.9L V6 TFSI (Global/Petrol): 444 HP / 600 Nm. Found in markets like USA/Middle East/Asia. Faster top end, but less torque and significantly higher fuel consumption.
Interior & Practicality
- Dual Touchscreens: The C8 interior features the dual MMI Touch Response screens with haptic feedback. It looks futuristic but attracts fingerprints.
- Fastback Boot: The massive rear hatch opens to reveal 535 Litres of space. It is much easier to load than the S6 sedan. The rear seats fold flat for carrying long items.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- Consumption: 12–14 km/l (TDI). For a car with 700 Nm of torque, this is witchcraft. The petrol version does 7-8 km/l.
- Service: High. The TDI engine is complex (turbo + electric compressor + mild hybrid). Parts must be imported. The 8-speed Tiptronic is reliable but needs fluid changes.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
Air Suspension: Standard adaptive air suspension allows you to raise the car slightly, but it is still a low, long vehicle. The 20 or 21-inch wheels with low-profile tyres are prone to damage on potholes. It is strictly a highway missile.
Safety & Reliability
5-Star Euro NCAP. Features Quattro AWD for immense grip in wet conditions. The TDI engine is durable if driven long distances (to clear the DPF), but city driving can clog it up.
