2014 Nissan Cedric (Y31): A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The Nissan Cedric (Y31) is a time traveler. While the Cedric nameplate debuted in 1960, the Y31 generation launched in 1987 and was so beloved by taxi companies and VIP fleets in Japan that Nissan kept building it until 2014. It is not a modern car; it is a brand-new classic. With its boxy styling, fender mirrors (on some models), and plush velour interior, it offers a "wafting" ride quality that modern cars with low-profile tyres simply cannot replicate.
Quick Specs
Engine Options & Model Codes
Engine choices are built for durability, not speed:
- 2.0L Petrol (NA20P): 85 HP. LPG COMPATIBLE Often found in models factory-prepped for LPG. Extremely durable but slow.
- 3.0L V6 (VG30E): 160 HP. Found in the higher-spec "Brougham" or "Classic SV" models. Smooth, lazy torque, perfect for cruising.
Interior & Practicality
- Velour Heaven: Unlike modern leather which gets hot, the Cedric uses high-quality wool/velour upholstery. It feels like a 1980s executive lounge.
- Analog Charm: No touchscreens, no digital dashboards. Just clear, legible analog dials and a column shifter (on some models) to allow for a front bench seat.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- Consumption: 7–9 km/l (Petrol). It is not efficient by modern standards. However, LPG conversions are straightforward.
- Service: The mechanicals are simple. Any mechanic who can fix a Nissan Hardbody can fix a Cedric. Parts might need to be sourced from specialty importers or Japan auctions as local stock is low.
- Durability: These cars regularly clock 500,000km as taxis in Tokyo. The chassis is incredibly robust.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
Soft Ride: The suspension is tuned for comfort, soaking up potholes that would shatter the spine of a sports sedan driver. 155mm clearance is decent, but the long rear overhang means you must be careful on steep exits.
Safety & Reliability
Basic safety. Driver airbag and ABS are usually standard on late models (2010+), but do not expect curtain airbags or lane assist. Reliability is its primary selling point—it is built to commercial standards.
The Ci Verdict
Who is this for? The collector or JDM enthusiast who wants a unique, ultra-comfortable cruiser that stands out from the sea of Mark Xs. Who is it NOT for? Anyone who cares about fuel economy or modern infotainment.
