2019 Honda Civic: Review, Prices & Specs

2019 Honda Civic: A Carimports.co.ke Review

The Big Picture

The Honda Civic (10th Generation - FK/FC) is a statement car. It marked Honda’s return to bold, aggressive styling after years of conservative designs. The 2019 model is the benchmark for driving dynamics in the C-segment, sitting lower and wider than the Premio or Axela. It is designed for the enthusiast who needs a family car but refuses to drive something boring.

Quick Specs

Ground Clearance 135mm
Tank Size 47 Litres
Power 180 HP (Turbo)
Seating 5 Seats

Engine Options & Model Codes

Japanese imports almost exclusively feature the VTEC Turbo engine.

  • 1.5L VTEC Turbo (Code: FK7 / FC1) RECOMMENDED
Features the L15B7 engine. It produces ~180 HP and 220 Nm of torque. It delivers the punch of a 2.4L engine with the fuel economy of a 1.5L. "FK7" is the Hatchback; "FC1" is the Sedan.

Interior & Practicality

  • Cockpit: The seating position is low and sporty. The digital instrument cluster is focused on the driver. Materials are soft-touch and premium, a step above the Toyota Premio.
  • Space: Rear legroom is surprisingly generous (comparable to a Camry). The Hatchback (FK7) offers a massive boot with a retractable cargo cover that can be swapped from side to side.

Infotainment & Technology

  • Honda Sensing: Standard on most 2019 imports. Includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow, which is fantastic for Nairobi traffic jams.
  • Electric Parking Brake: Comes with "Brake Hold" function, allowing you to take your foot off the brake at traffic lights.

Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs

  • Fuel Economy: 14–16 km/l (Driven gently)
  • Performance Driving: 8–10 km/l (When turbo is active)
  • Oil: Requires fully synthetic 0W-20 oil. Do not use cheap mineral oil, or the turbo will fail.

Suitability for Kenyan Roads

  • Ground Clearance: Low (135mm). This is the car's Achilles heel. It scrapes on standard Kenyan speed bumps. You *must* approach bumps at an angle or install mild spacers (20mm max) to avoid ruining the handling.
  • Tires: Low-profile 18-inch tires look great but are prone to pinch flats on potholes. Keep pressures high.

Safety & Reliability

The L15B7 engine had early issues with "Oil Dilution" in cold climates, but 2019 models have updated software. In Kenya's warm climate, this is rarely an issue. The CVT is robust but prefers smooth inputs over aggressive launches.

💰 2019 Honda Civic Price in Kenya

The following are estimated showroom prices for fresh imports (duty-paid) in major Kenyan cities including **Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Eldoret**.

Trim Level Est. Import Cost Avg. Yard Price Difference
Sedan (FC1) Ksh 2.2M - 2.4M Ksh 2.7M - 2.9M ~Ksh 500k
Hatchback (FK7) Ksh 2.4M - 2.6M Ksh 3.0M - 3.2M ~Ksh 600k

The Ci Verdict

The Honda Civic is the best driving car in its class, hands down. It makes the Premio feel ancient and the Axela feel slow. However, it requires a careful owner who will respect its low ground clearance and adhere to strict maintenance schedules. If you live in an area with tarmac roads, buy it.
