The 2020 Audi e-tron (now renamed Q8 e-tron in newer models) was Audi's first serious attempt at a mass-production electric vehicle. Launched in 2018, its philosophy was simple: make an electric car that feels exactly like a normal Audi. It sits between the Q5 and Q7 in size. Unlike the minimalist Tesla Model X, the e-tron retains physical buttons, a familiar gear shifter, and traditional luxury build quality, making it the perfect "transition EV" for conservative Kenyan buyers.

Choosing the right battery is critical for range:

• e-tron 55 quattro (95 kWh): 402 HP. RECOMMENDED The larger battery offers a realistic range of 350-400km. It supports 150kW fast charging.
• e-tron 50 quattro (71 kWh): 308 HP. The budget option. Range drops to approx 280-300km. Only suitable if you strictly drive within Nairobi and its environs.

• Virtual Mirrors: Some models come with cameras instead of side mirrors, displaying the feed on OLED screens in the door. It looks cool but takes time to get used to—and expensive to replace if a boda boda hits one.
• Silence: The cabin insulation is world-class. It is quieter than a Rolls Royce at city speeds. Boot space (660 Litres) is generous and usable.

• Charging: A home wall box (11kW or 22kW) is mandatory. Charging at home costs peanuts compared to petrol.
• Service: Low routine maintenance (no oil, no spark plugs). However, suspension components and electronics are pure Audi—complex and expensive.
• Tyres: The car weighs 2.5 tonnes. It chews through tyres every 20,000-25,000km. Ensure you buy "EV-rated" tyres to handle the weight and torque.

Air Suspension Standard: The e-tron comes with adaptive air suspension that can raise the clearance to 220mm (Off-road mode). This makes it surprisingly capable on rough roads, far better than a Model Y or I-PACE. Just watch out for the battery pack underneath.

5-Star Euro NCAP. Reliability of the drivetrain is solid, but earlier models (2019/2020) had some recalls regarding battery seals (water ingress). Ensure all recalls have been performed before importing.
