You buy a clean Land Cruiser V8 in Japan. It has the original floor mats, the expensive "Modelista" body kit, and the original SD Card in the radio.

It arrives in Mombasa via RoRo. You go to pick it up. The SD card is gone. The shift knob is missing. The "V8" badges have been pried off the boot. You are furious.

This is the reality of RoRo Shipping. While it is the cheapest way to move a car, it is also the least secure. For high-value units, you need to upgrade to a Container.

1. RoRo (Roll-on / Roll-off): The "Floating Parking Lot"

90% of cars coming to Kenya come via RoRo.

  • How it works: Port workers drive your car onto the ship in Japan, park it, and drive it off in Mombasa.
  • The Security Flaw: Your keys are inside the car. Dozens of strangers (drivers, stevedores, cleaners) have access to your interior during the 4-week voyage.
  • The Risk: "Pilferage." Small, high-value items (SD cards, cigarette lighters, tools) often disappear.
  • The Rule: NO personal goods are allowed inside the car. If you put a set of spare tyres in the boot, the shipping line will throw them away in Japan.

2. Container Shipping: The "Private Vault"

If you are importing a Range Rover, Porsche, or Land Cruiser, this is mandatory.

  • How it works: Your car is driven into a steel container (20ft or 40ft). The container is sealed with a padlock and a numbered bolt seal. It is not opened until it reaches you (or the CFS).
  • The Security: 100% Secure. No one touches the car.
  • The Cost: It costs significantly more.
    • 20ft Container (1 Car): Approx $1,500 - $2,000 extra over RoRo.
    • 40ft Container (3-4 Cars): If you import multiple cars, you can "Groupage" them. This brings the cost down to almost the same as RoRo.

3. The "Stuffing" Advantage (The Dealer Secret)

This is why big dealers love containers.

📦 "Stuffing" Allowed

Unlike RoRo, containers allow you to pack extra goods inside the car.

The Strategy: Dealers often buy a set of expensive Off-Road Tyres, Service Filters, and Spare Parts in Japan (where they are cheap) and stuff them into the boot and back seat of the car.

Since you are paying for the whole container, the shipping line doesn't care. You just declare them to KRA upon arrival.

4. The Decision Matrix

Scenario Recommended Method
Standard Unit (Fielder, Harrier, Note) RoRo (Save Money)
High Value (V8, Benz S-Class) Container (Security)
Non-Runner (Accident Car) Container (Avoid Forklift Fees)
Importing Spares Container (Stuffing)

Summary

  • RoRo is cheap but "leaky." Don't be surprised if the SD card is missing.
  • Container is expensive but secure. Use it for cars worth over Ksh 5 Million.
  • Groupage: If you buy 3 cars at once, put them in a 40ft High Cube container. It is safer and costs the same as RoRo per unit.
